Karnataka government has appointed Deepak Gaikwad, Deputy Drugs Controller, Regional Office, Belgaum, as the State Licensing Authority. This is in adherence to Parts IX and X of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
The government issued the provisional orders with immediate effect and until further orders are issued in the interest of the public, stated a communique from the state government’s health and family welfare department.
In fact, the government has spelt out that the move was in exercise of the powers conferred under relevant Rules VI, VII, XB, and XIV under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules.
The order also stated that the appointment was also in exercise of the powers conferred under Paras VI-A and VII- A, read with Rule 85-B of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
Deepak Gaikwad would now be the licensing authority for Karnataka which has 30 districts.
Further, the government in its note also stated that the said licensing authority is permitted to delegate its licensing powers for the purpose of Part VI and Part VI-A of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules to any other officer under his control as per the provisions of Rule 60 and Rule 67-B of the Drugs and Cosmetic Rules with immediate effect until further orders.
Karnataka is home to 326 pharma companies. The industry here has been audited by global regulatory authorities too, which includes the USFDA, UK MHRA, and European Medicines Agency (EMA), to name a few.
The companies in the state are acknowledged for their high-quality standards in pharma manufacturing and timely deliveries of supplies.
Most of the large Indian and multinational companies outsource from Karnataka which also accounts for the production of the top 10 brands in India.
This is mainly attributed to the robust state regulatory department that calls for strict implementation of systems.
