Maharashtra: The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) has put the notification for the selection of 87 drug inspectors in the food and drug administration on hold.

On November 17, 2021, the MPSC came out with a notification inviting applications from pharmacy graduates having three years of experience in drug manufacturing units to fill up vacancies as drug inspectors. The last date for submitting applications was December 8, 2021.

The requirement of three years of work experience has drawn flak from pharmacy graduates preparing for the examination to be conducted by the MPSC to recruit the drug inspectors.

The mandatory requirement of experience for the appointment of drug inspectors has put thousands of candidates out of the selection criteria.

Maharashtra Registered Pharmacists’ Association (MRPA) has raised the issue with Maharashtra FDA minister Rajendra Shingane. The minister assured us that necessary action would be taken in this regard.

On December 11, 2021, the MPSC put the notification for the selection of drug inspectors on hold, following direction from the state government.

Said Kailash Tandale, president, MRPA, “There are scores of B Pharm pass outs looking for employment. Recruitment of drug inspectors is a ray of hope for them. Given the situation, it is difficult for the candidates preparing for the MPSC exams to fulfill the selection criteria.”

Tandale demanded that the B Pharm holders who have work experience be allowed to serve on probation in various posts under the state government.

He also demanded that Bachelor of Pharmacy should be recognized by MPSC as one of the academic qualifications for selection of forest officers, women and child welfare officers, and various posts in the health department.

Tandale said the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) in the Nidhi Pandey vs Union Public Service Commission case has clarified that Rule 49 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules does not mandate experience as a prerequisite qualification for the appointment of drug inspectors.

Following this, UPSC and several states, including Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Sikkim, have done away with experience as a pre-requisite qualification for the recruitment of drug inspectors, he added.
