Hyderabad: Telangana Pollution Control Board has issued directions to 10 pharma companies to comply with pollution control norms.

The TSPCB conducted a hearing of pollution-affected Anthemmagudem farmers of Pochamapply Mandal, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, regarding problems faced by them due to the pharma companies situated around the village.

The meeting was held on February 19, 2022, at PCB headquarters in Sanathnagar in the city. Villagers displayed photographs establishing the illegal chemical water discharge by various pharmaceutical industries.

Advocate Sravan Kumar said, “They have informed PCB officials that the units are releasing chemical gases in the evening and nights every day, which has resulted in severe health problems.”

Advocate T Sudhakar, appearing on behalf of farmers, told the PCB that units were continuously harming the environment, but the PCB had not taken effective measures to control pollution.

The units took advantage of the pandemic and carried out huge expansion of capacity, which may impact surrounding villages further, he said.

TSPCB sought an explanation from representatives of pharma firms. It warned them that if the grievance is not rectified, it will initiate action, including the closing of units.
