Ahmedabad: Gujarat has received in-principle approval to set up a bulk drug park in Jambusar and the state’s pharma industry expects the park to be operational in three years.
The Gujarat government will give incentives to the industry in relation to such aspects as stamp duty, electricity duty, and interest subsidies.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) will have to be submitted in 90 days and then the final approval will be granted. Gujarat, a hub for pharma formulations, hopes to enhance its competitiveness with the establishment of the park.
Gujarat’s Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) commissioner H G Koshia said, “About 16 states were in competition to get the nod to set up three bulk drug parks in the country and Gujarat has got one of them.”
He added, “The state government will provide various incentives to the industry such as relief in stamp duty and electricity duty and it will also provide interest subsidies on capital investment.”
He went on to say, “This park will help the Gujarat pharma sector grow faster with the easy availability of Active Pharma Ingredients.”
According to sources, the states that have received in-principle approval for the parks will have to submit the DPR within 90 days.
After receiving the final approval, the process to attract companies to the parks will be started.
The department of pharmaceuticals has given in-principle approval to Gujarat’s ambitious bulk drug park under the scheme of Promotion of Bulk Drug Parks.
The central government will provide assistance of up to ₹1,000 crores to develop infrastructure and common facilities in the park.
Virinchi Shah, the president of the Indian Drug Manufacturers’ Association (IDMA), said, “The scheme was launched to make India self-reliant in APIs.”
This bulk drug park will make the Gujarat pharma industry more competitive in the global market.”
Shah added: “Our dependence on imports will reduce significantly with local production. Also, currently, our industry gets many APIs from Telangana and therefore transportation cost is high.”
Shah went on to say, “We hope the Jambusar park will be operational in three years. Common facilities will be developed by the central government so manufacturing costs will be low.”
Gujarat contributes 28% to domestic pharma manufacturing and about 30% to exports. The state has the highest (more than 700) WHO GMP manufacturing units in the country.
