The Union Health Ministry recently made it clear that while a person with a Diploma in Pharmacy (D Pharma), Bachelor of Pharmacy (B Pharma), or Master of Pharmacy (M Pharma) qualification is eligible to be appointed, a person with a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D) qualification is also eligible for appointment to various posts.

The notice reiterates the Gazette notification released by the government in this regard in 2019.

The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), which was established in accordance with Section 3 of the Pharmacy Act of 1948 (8 of 1948), provided recommendations on which the decision was based.

The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has approved and regulated the Pharm. D professional pharmacy doctoral program.

It is a total six years program after 10+2 or D. Pharm which includes five years of academic study and one year of internship.

The curriculum, which was introduced in 2008, combines science with the practice of dispensing medications.

Pharm D candidates get skilled in diagnosis, therapeutics usage of drugs, treatment and selection of diseases, and so on.

They perform tasks like monitoring patients, diagnosing the disease, and others.

D.Pharm, B.Pharm, and Pharm.D are the registerable qualifications under the Pharmacy Act, 1948, provided they are obtained from an institution approved by the PCI u/s 12 of the Pharmacy Act, 1948 for the purpose of registration as a pharmacist.

This is to clear up any confusion regarding the minimum qualification for a pharmacist in India.

The Council recommended the same to the Central Government that, via its recently issued Gazette held;

“The Central Government, on the recommendations of the Pharmacy Council of India constituted under Section 3 of the Pharmacy Act, 1948 (8 of 1948), decided that a person holding the Pharm. D qualification, being the higher qualification, shall automatically become eligible for appointment to various posts where a person holding a Diploma in Pharmacy or Bachelor of Pharmacy or Master of Pharmacy qualification is eligible to be appointed.”
