The Authentication Solution Providers’ Association (ASPA) is taking the lead in the fight against counterfeiting and is committed to achieving a target of zero counterfeiting of drugs.
With India’s government mandating only a QR code for trace and track, ASPA aims to strengthen the fight against counterfeit drugs by aggressively advancing on a strategic path towards zero counterfeiting.
Starting August 1, 2023, the top 300 brands of formulations will require a QR code under the Drugs (Eighth Amendment) Rules, 2022.

This QR code will enable the identification of misbranded or counterfeit drugs and help to recall products if their quality gets compromised during manufacturing of drugs.
Counterfeiting constitutes almost 25-30% of products in India and poses a significant threat to the economy.
This underbelly of counterfeiting and illicit trade of drugs is most prevalent in the pharma sector.
ASPA is rolling out a five-year strategy from 2022-2027 to become a global industry voice in the authentication and traceability ecosystem.
The association aims to implement:
- A strategic plan that includes advanced research and development,
- Promoting the adoption of solutions,
- Increasing awareness of authentication and traceability solutions (ATS),
- Developing tools to measure the impact of counterfeiting and its scale,
- Encouraging the adoption of professional ethics and best practices within the Association,
- Enhancing the global reach and footprint of ASPA.
ASPA President Nakul Pasricha stated that the association is committing to concerted efforts towards zero counterfeiting of drugs as the nation celebrates its 75th Independence Year as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.’
The industry must work together with governments to protect consumers from getting cheated, protect products, and protect businesses.
Authentication solutions offer significant returns on investment, and India is expected to see a sharp rise in their adoption.
To accelerate the pace of zero counterfeiting, ASPA is launching the next chapter of their ‘Traceability and Authentication Forum’ in July 2023 at Hotel Hyatt Regency, Chanakya Puri, New Delhi, to address the problem of counterfeiting and illicit trade.
