Drug Safety

Drug Safety: The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) is set to mark the 3rd National Pharmacovigilance Week from September 17 to 23, centered around the theme “Boosting Public Confidence in Pharmacovigilance“.

This initiative aims to foster a culture of patient-centricity and safety across the nation.

Monitoring Adverse Drug Reactions: A Nationwide Endeavor

At present, the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) oversees a network of 760 Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Centers (AMCs) across the country.

PvPI stands as a pioneering program in the realm of drug safety, dedicated to the collection, consolidation, and analysis of drug-related adverse events, primarily sourced from these AMCs.

A Vision for Safer Medication Practices

The overarching vision of PvPI is to enhance patient well-being and security within the Indian populace.

This is achieved through vigilant monitoring of drug safety, consequently heightening awareness among stakeholders to mitigate risks linked with pharmaceutical use.

Empowering Healthcare Professionals and Patients

IPC took a significant stride three years ago by introducing a physical form for voluntary reporting of suspected Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) by healthcare professionals, an integral part of the PvPI.

Simultaneously, a reporting form for consumers and patients experiencing medicine-related side effects was also rolled out.

Accessible Reporting Channels

As part of this initiative, a Toll-Free PvPI Helpline – 1800-180-3024 – was launched, operational from Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., providing a direct channel for the public to voice their concerns.

Effortless Reporting Process

Should there be a suspicion of an adverse event or reaction, healthcare professionals attending to the patient can complete the suspected ADR form.

Likewise, if a patient suspects they’ve experienced an ADR, they can report it at the nearest AMC under the PvPI.

Details of these centers can be found on the IPC website: www.ipc.gov.in.

Streamlined Online Reporting

For added convenience, healthcare professionals can utilize the “Suspected Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting Form,” available here.

Consumers can access the “Medicines Side Effect Reporting Form (For Consumers) here, tailored for consumer use in Hindi and other vernacular languages.

Direct Reporting Channels

Reports can be sent directly to the nearest AMC or forwarded to the National Coordination Centre (NCC) of PvPI at pvpi@ipcindia.net or ipclab@vsnl.net.

Additionally, the Toll-Free helpline number (1800-180-3024) remains open for direct ADR reporting.

Innovative Mobile Reporting

For Android users, reporting Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) is just a click away. The “ADR PvPI” Mobile app is available for download on the Google Play Store, offering a convenient and user-friendly platform to voice concerns.

By conducting the 3rd National Pharmacovigilance Week, IPC is not only reinforcing its commitment to pharmacovigilance but also empowering both healthcare professionals and patients to ensure a safer medication environment.

Through accessible reporting channels and innovative technologies, the goal of enhancing public confidence in pharmacovigilance takes a significant step forward.
