Methamphetamine

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) foils a major drug smuggling operation regarding methamphetamine tablets.

Based on specific intelligence, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence intercepted a vehicle plying on the Aizawl-Champhai Highway (NH-6) at Seling, Mizoram, on 30th May.

Thereafter, a substantial quantity of methamphetamine tablets was recovered, valued at an international contraband price of Rs. 9.72 crore for approximately 9.72 kg.

Prominent Arrest

The DRI officers searched the vehicle after interception and found that the smugglers had gone to great lengths to hide the shipment.

Recovery from a specially carved cavity inside the rear seat of the vehicle gave ten packets containing the narcotic.

The fact that the substance was hidden there speaks volumes about how far traffickers will go to carry out their illegal efforts.

While the contraband packets and vehicle were seized, one person was arrested on the spot under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

A preliminary inquiry has revealed that it was smuggled from Myanmar into India through the Zokhawthar sector of the Indo-Myanmar Border and then brought to Champhai.

Drug syndicates operate through a well-oiled cross-border network, which can only be thwarted by better border security.

Continued Efforts Against Narcotics

This seizure is part of a sustained effort undertaken by DRI in Mizoram throughout this year.

Since January 2025, the Directorate has been proactively operational against drug traffickers.

It has successfully recovered methamphetamines and heroin worth over Rs. 72 crore from multiple recovery sites across Mizoram, which indicates efforts to crack down on drug operations and renewed focus by the Directorate.

In total, seven persons have been arrested in various recoveries that indicate DRI’s sustained focus on apprehending those behind such lucrative and deadly trade.

The NDPS Act, 1985, acknowledges the potential dangers of these drugs and therefore prescribes harsh punishments for anyone who gets involved with such illegal activities, such as rigorous imprisonment extended to 10 years, for such substances are banned not only because they are health hazards but also socio-economic hazards.

Q: What health hazards result from taking methamphetamines?

A: Strokes, cardiac arrest, severe organ damage, or even death with higher doses.

Q: What is the punishment if caught under NDPS Act, 1985?

A: The NDPS Act prescribes stringent punishment for offenders which includes rigorous imprisonment up to 10 years.
