Urging the pharmacy institutions, academics and student community to explore all opportunities to help the society in the present health crisis the nation faces today, the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has called upon all the stakeholders to utilize their potentials for the safety and well-being of the country’s people in this crucial time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an advisory issued to all stakeholders of pharmacy profession, PCI has asked them to take part in the control measures being carried out by the local health authorities in countering the spread of the pandemic. All the institutions, teachers, students and other pharmacists have been asked to assist the health authorities by creating awareness, supporting medical professionals and counseling patients about disease and safety measures. The advisory was issued to all stakeholders by Dr. B Suresh, president of the PCI on March 20.
Meanwhile, considering the risk of getting infected with coronavirus disease in crowded settings and during travels, the country’s pharmacy education regulator has suspended all the ongoing and the scheduled inspections in institutions until further dates are announced.
The Council has wanted all its inspectors to stop the process of inspection for the time-being and return to their homes immediately. It is learnt that PCI wants to join hands with the leadership of the nation in exercising the principles of restraint and resolve by giving all support to the control measures being taken by the government to counter the virus outbreak.
The Council urges the examining authorities to check the possibility for postponing the examinations already scheduled to a further date on the basis of the guidelines issued by each state government. All institutions are wanted to follow the guidelines of the central and state governments. The e-mail advisory sent to all institutions states that all stakeholders should observe strict personal hygiene and follow social distancing and restricted movements.

As a token of allegiance and cooperation, the Council has assured all pharmacy colleges that they need not worry about the approval processes and the statutory compliance because the council will take necessary steps to resolve such issues in due course of time. The council wanted the institutions to comply with all the guidelines issued on account of COIVID 19 by the central government and respective state governments. Dr Suresh advised all institutional heads to give maximum attention on safety and well-being of the students, teachers and other staffs in the institutions.
Dr Suresh has expressed the hope that with the support of the services being rendered by pharmacy professionals, India will survive the present health crisis and it will continue to be the pharma hub of the world.
