Dependence on Imported Raw Materials

The Indian parliamentary committee on Science and Technology, Environment, Forests and Climate Change has requested the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to establish both short-term and long-term goals for reducing the Indian pharmaceutical industry’s reliance on imported raw materials.

The committee has recommended reducing the present 80% dependence on imports to 30-40% within the next five years. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh heads the committee.

Key Recommendations:

The parliamentary committee proposed the following suggestions to help accomplish the targets:

  1. Mission project: The proposed mission project should align with other initiatives taken by different ministries, departments and the private sector.
  2. Adequate funding: The CSIR should set aside sufficient funds for research work to achieve the goal, without any financial constraints.
  3. New technologies: The committee advised exploring the latest emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), to achieve the desired outcomes within the shortest possible timeframe.

Conclusion:

The committee’s recommendations aim to reduce the Indian pharmaceutical industry‘s dependence on imported raw materials by setting specific targets and identifying new technologies.

The suggested measures will help reduce the industry’s reliance on imports and increase domestic production.
