Jan Aushadhi Kendra
In a recent announcement, the Cooperation Ministry revealed that the government has approved the establishment of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras by 2,000 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) throughout India.
By August, approximately 1,000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras will be operational, with the remaining 1,000 scheduled to open by December this year.
This decision was made during a meeting between Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Mansukh S Mandaviya.
Expansion of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras
The key highlights of this expansion initiative are as follows:
Opening of Jan Aushadhi Kendras:
A total of 2,000 PACS across the country will be identified and authorized to establish Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras.
The goal is to have 1,000 Kendras operational by August and an additional 1,000 by December this year.
Benefits for PACS and Employment Opportunities:
This significant decision aims to enhance the income of PACS and generate employment opportunities. Additionally, it will ensure the availability of affordable medicines to people, particularly those residing in rural areas.
Current Status and Benefits of Jan Aushadhi Kendras
To date, more than 9,400 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been established nationwide. These Kendras offer around 1,800 types of medicines and 285 other medical devices.
The cost of medications at these Kendras is considerably lower, ranging from 50% to 90% compared to branded medicines.
Eligibility Criteria and Application Process
The Ministry has provided the following eligibility criteria and application process for individuals and organizations interested in opening a Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra:
- Individual Applicants: Applicants must hold a D Pharma/B Pharma degree.
- Organizational Applicants: NGOs, charitable organizations, hospitals, and other entities can apply by appointing B Pharma/D Pharma degree holders.
- Space Requirement: A minimum area of 120 square feet, either privately owned or on rent, is necessary for opening a Jan Aushadhi Kendra.
- Application Fee: The application fee for a Kendra is set at Rs 5,000.
Special Categories and Areas
The government has designated special categories and areas for specific considerations:
- Special Category: Women entrepreneurs, divyang (persons with disabilities), scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and ex-servicemen fall under the special category.
- Special Areas: Aspirational districts, the Himalayan Mountain Region, northeastern states, and islands are classified as special areas.
For applicants from special categories and special areas, there is an exemption from the application fee.
Incentives for Jan Aushadhi Kendras
Jan Aushadhi Kendras receive the following incentives:
- Incentive Amount: Kendras are eligible for an incentive amount of Rs 5 lakh, which is equivalent to 15% of their monthly purchases or a maximum of Rs 15,000 per month.
- Additional Incentive: Special categories and areas are entitled to a one-time additional incentive of Rs 2 lakh for IT and infrastructure expenditure reimbursement.
By implementing this expansion plan, the government aims to enhance access to affordable healthcare for people across the country, particularly in rural areas.
The establishment of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras through PACS will not only boost the income of these societies but also create employment opportunities, thereby contributing to the overall welfare of the nation.
