Counterfeit drugs
In a significant operation, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and West Bengal state drug regulatory authorities collaborated to confiscate an estimated Rs 2 crore-worth of counterfeit drugs from a clandestine warehouse in Kolkata.
Health Ministry officials made the announcement, revealing that one individual has been apprehended in connection with the incident and has been remanded to judicial custody for ten days by the Bankshall Court in Kolkata.
Counterfeit drugs Seized:
- Counterfeit drugs valued at approximately Rs 2 crore, belonging to prominent manufacturers including Sun Pharmaceutical, Alkem, Cipla, Glenmark, GSK, Abbott, Novartis, Dr. Reddy’s, and Aristo were seized from an unlicensed facility located at 82, Moulana Shaukat Ali Street, Kolkata.
- The confiscated counterfeit drugs / medicines were fraudulently labeled as renowned brands like Augmentin, Pan-D, Pantocid DSR, Urimax-D, and Clavam, among others.
Conducting the Raid:
- The raid took place on July 8, carried out by a dedicated team of officers from CDSCO East Zone, with invaluable assistance from officials of the Directorate of Drugs Control, West Bengal.
- The operation was initiated based on crucial information gathered from a previous arrest that occurred a few months ago, where spurious and counterfeit drugs, amounting to approximately Rs 10 lakh, were seized from leading manufacturers.
Ongoing Investigation:
- As the dust settles after the successful raid, officials have affirmed that further investigation into the matter is already underway.
- This recent operation was triggered by a complaint filed with the CDSCO East Zone, Kolkata, on January 1, by Sun Pharma Laboratories Limited.
- The complaint pointed to the sale and storage of suspected spurious (counterfeit) products at SENCO, Bagri Market, Kolkata.
The joint efforts of the CDSCO and the West Bengal state drug regulatory authorities have dealt a significant blow to the distribution of counterfeit drugs in the region.
The seizure of such a large quantity of fake medications, valued at a staggering Rs 2 crore, underscores the need for continuous vigilance and stringent measures to combat the proliferation of counterfeit drugs in the pharmaceutical market.
The Health Ministry officials are commended for their dedication to safeguarding public health, and their commitment to investigating and eradicating such illicit activities is vital for the wellbeing of the nation.
