Fake Drugs

The Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) has struck a significant blow against fake drugs, unraveling a clandestine network involved in the illegal production and distribution of substandard antibiotics.

In a coordinated series of raids across multiple cities, authorities seized fake drugs exceeding Rs. 1.75 crore, exposing a grave threat to public health.

Cracking Down on Fake Drugs

Under the leadership of FDCA Commissioner Dr. H. G. Koshia, the operation sends a stern warning to those engaged in illicit activities.

Dr. Koshia reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring the availability of genuine and high-quality drugs to citizens.

This crackdown follows a previous operation in October 2023 that uncovered a fake drug racket worth Rs. 55 lakhs in Ahmedabad and Himmatnagar.

Legal Actions and Commitment

Legal action is underway within the state against those manipulating drug samples.

Dr. Koshia asserts the Gujarat FDCA’s determination to take strict measures against those involved in the sale of illegal and counterfeit drugs.

The recent seizure emphasizes the administration’s commitment to safeguarding public health against such grave threats.

Investigation Details

As part of the ongoing investigation, nine samples of various drugs, including azithromycin tablets, cefixime dispersible tablets, amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate tablets, aceclofenac, paracetamol, and serratiopeptidase tablets, were seized.

These samples were sent to the Food and Drug Laboratory (FDL) in Vadodara for detailed analysis.

Raid on Fraudulent Factories

Guided by Dr. Koshia, a dedicated team raided potentially fraudulent factories involved in the illegal production of unlicensed and fake drugs.

The crackdown led to the discovery and seizure of a fake manufacturing factory equipped with a Mass Mixer, Compression Machine, Coating Machine, and Packing Machines.

Illicit Operation Threatening Public Health

Valued at about Rs. 1.25 crore, including coating material and prepared tablets, the factory operated under the name and license of a firm licensed in another state.

This illicit operation posed a serious threat to public health, as raw materials and substandard drugs were sold without proper testing or technical oversight.

Distribution Network and Implicated Entities

The illegal drugs, produced in the seized factory, were distributed to various cities within Gujarat.

Implicated distributors include Tara Medical Agency, R.H.T. Drug House, Naysar Pharma, Medicasa Healthcare, Maa Chandra Pharma, Neelcare Life Sciences, Deegen Remedies, Natron Pharma, CSP Distributors, J.D. Pharma, and Keshav Drug Agency.

Wide Reach of Counterfeit Drug Trade

Dr. Koshia revealed that the seizure of drugs worth around Rs. 51 lakhs in various cities underscores the widespread reach of the counterfeit drug trade in Gujarat.

Investigations are ongoing in other regions of the state to dismantle similar operations and bring those responsible to justice.
