Coronary Stents

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has announced a minimal revision to the ceiling prices of coronary stents, effective April 1, 2024.

This adjustment reflects the low inflation rate observed in the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) for the year 2023 compared to 2022.

Slight Price Increase for Coronary Stents

  • Bare Metal Stents: The revised ceiling price for bare metal stents is ₹10,509.79 per unit.
  • Drug-Eluting Stents (DES): This category, including metallic DES and bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS), now has a revised ceiling price of ₹38,267.18 per unit.

Key Points for Manufacturers and Retailers:

  • Manufacturers and importers with a current Maximum Retail Price (MRP) lower than the new ceiling price can increase their MRP to reflect the WPI change (0.00551%) while following the Drugs Prices Control Order (DPCO) 2013 guidelines.
  • As mandated by DPCO 2013, retailers and dealers must prominently display the latest price list for coronary stents, including any supplementary price lists provided by the manufacturer.
  • Non-compliance with the revised ceiling prices can lead to penalties under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order 2013 and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

Coronary Stents Classified as Essential Medicines

The inclusion of coronary stents in the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) 2015 and 2022 highlights their critical role in managing coronary artery disease (CAD), a significant public health concern in India.

This classification ensures greater affordability and accessibility of these life-saving devices.

Balancing Innovation with Affordability

While medical devices differ from medications in their nature and manufacturing processes, coronary stents fall under the “Drug” category as per the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.

This enables the NPPA to regulate their pricing and ensure a balance between promoting innovation in stent technology and maintaining affordability for patients.

The NPPA’s ongoing efforts to revise ceiling prices for drugs included in the NLEM 2022 demonstrate their commitment to making essential healthcare more accessible for all Indian citizens.
