Spectrophotometers
Gujarat’s fight against substandard and counterfeit drugs just got a major upgrade.
The Food and Drug Control Administration Gujarat (FDCA Gujarat) has given its drug inspectors spectrophotometers, for on-site drug testing.
State govt has alloted Rs. 10 crore for this unique initiative to enhance the public safety.
Why the Spectrophotometer Leap?
Imagine a world where drug inspectors can instantly verify the quality of medications right in the field, cutting down the often lengthy process of laboratory analysis.
That’s precisely what these advanced devices promise.
Dr. Hemant Koshia, Commissioner of Gujarat FDCA, emphasized the significance of this move, stating, “This initiative will significantly enhance our ability to detect and eliminate spurious drugs from the market.
The availability of portable spectrophotometers ensures that drug quality assessments can be conducted efficiently and promptly.”
Real-time testing of drugs:
The spectrophotometers using light absorption techniques gives instant result regarding the composition of drugs.
This is very important technique to identify the presence of any potential harmful substances in the drug.
Reduced Reliance on Laboratories:
By testing the drugs on the site , the FDCA Gujarat can minimize the time and resources spent on traditional procedures of drug testing by the laboratories which leads faster action by the regulatory officers.
Enhanced action:
Even the presence of these types of devices gives a powerful deterrent against the manufacturing and distribution of fake / counterfeit drugs in the market which protects the patients / consumers from any adveres effect of the drugs.
Boosting Infrastructure: A New Food and Drug Testing Lab
Complementing the handheld spectrophotometer initiative, the Gujarat government has also allocated Rs. 4 lakh for establishing a new food and drug testing laboratory.
This laboratory, likely to be situated in Ahmedabad or Gandhinagar, will further bolster the state’s testing infrastructure.
The strategic placement of this lab will ensure that both pharmaceutical and food products adhere to stringent safety and quality standards.
Comprehensive Testing:
The new lab will provide advanced testing capabilities for a wide range of pharmaceutical and food products.
Strategic Location:
Choosing Ahmedabad or Gandhinagar as the location ensures accessibility and efficiency in testing processes.
Reinforced Safety Standards:
The lab’s establishment reinforces Gujarat’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards in food and drug safety.
The Science Behind the Scrutiny: How Spectrophotometers Work
The power of the spectrophotometer lies in its ability to analyze the interaction of light with a substance.
Spectrophotometry, at its core, measures the intensity of light absorbed by a compound at specific wavelengths.
This measurement directly correlates with the concentration of the compound, providing crucial data about the drug’s content, purity, and stability.
Light Absorption:
The device shines a beam of light through the sample.
Wavelength Analysis:
The device measures the amount of light absorbed at different wavelengths.
Concentration Determination:
The absorption data is used to determine the concentration of the compound in the sample.
Purity and Stability:
The data also reveals information about the drug’s purity and stability, ensuring its effectiveness and safety.
