The Karnataka government has urgently requested the Union health ministry to establish a nationwide system for sharing alerts about drugs that fail quality tests.
This plea comes amidst growing concerns about the distribution of substandard injections, particularly those failing crucial sterility tests, originating from manufacturers outside the state.
The state government fears these contaminated drugs may cause a serious threat to public health.
A fear of Failures and Serious Consequences
Karnataka’s concern is started by a series of alarming incidents happened recetly in the state.
Recently, nine injections were declared fail in sterility tests conducted by the drug testing laboratories of the state
These instances of substandard drugs entering the state’s supply chain have prompted decisive action.
Karnataka Health Minister appeals for a Coordination
In a letter to Union Health Minister, Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao highlighted the recurring problem of contaminated injections manufactured in other states being sold within Karnataka.
He emphasized the urgent need for a collaborative approach so that this serious issue may be tackled effectively.
Recent Specific Cases
Nine injectables failed sterility tests at Karnataka’s Drug Testing Laboratories (DTLs) in Bengaluru, Belgaum, and Huballi, manufactured by the manufacturers situated in the other states, between January 1 and February 16, 2025.
A National Problem
Minister Rao acknowledged that Karnataka is taking steps to remove these failed drugs from its market, however, the problem likely extends beyond state borders.
He expressed concern that these substandard drugs could be supplying in other states which may cause serious issues to the public health nationwide.
Call for National Alert System
Minister Rao urged the Union health ministry to create a comprehensive system for real-time information sharing between all states and central drug testing labs.
This system would disseminate alerts about drugs that fail quality testing, especially those posing a risk of serious adverse events.
He also stressed that the manufacturers must share sales records so that prompt action cloud be taken against the defaulters involved in the manufacturing and distributing the substandard drugs.
The goal is to promptly alert doctors, pharmacists, and patients about the substandard drugs.
Karnataka offered its assistance to the Central government in implementing such a nationl drug system.
Focus on High-Risk Injections
Minister Rao emphasized the high risk posed by substandard injections to critically ill patients, particularly in acute care system.
He called for the immediate withdrawal of all drugs manufactured by companies with a history of manufacturing substandard drugs.
Furthermore, he insisted that these companies should be barred from selling any drugs until they undergo thorough testing and inspection by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and demonstrate compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
