Antimicrobials
They’re vital for humans. Thus, the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) of India recommended a ban on manufacturing, importing, and using 34 antimicrobials intended for animals.
The same essential drugs in the EU are for reserved treatment in humans with severe infections.
Such a ban would contribute to India’s efforts to keep human drug effectiveness for as long as possible.
DTAB recommendation
DTAB Recommends According to news articles, the DTAB convened recently to discuss a recommendation to ban manufacture/import/sale/distribution of 37 antimicrobials for food-producing animals for growth promotion/yield increase.
These same 37 drugs are essential for humans.
Thus, it makes sense that these drugs are inappropriate for veterinary use.
Yet, even though the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) did not approve these 37 drugs for veterinary use in India, the Ministry of Commerce suggested this recommendation to further prevent any potential rise of antimicrobial resistance.
The minutes of the meeting indicate that not only did the board review the proposal to Prohibit, but they also acknowledge the risk involved due to such critical antimicrobials spanning species.
Moreover, the DAHD representative during the meeting remarked that he would not mind 34 such antimicrobials being dedicated solely to humans; therefore, this recommendation was made final.
The Proposal to Prohibit
The DTAB held its 92nd meeting on April 24, 2025, to review the situation and come to a consensus, and from this meeting, the DTAB suggested prohibiting the following 34 antimicrobial drug products relative to their families discussed in EU regulation 2022/1255 from animal use.
However, the Board wanted more information on these three families of antimicrobials before deciding:
- Carboxypenicillins, cephalosporins, combinations of beta-lactamase inhibitors, Phosphonic acid derivatives The DAHD must compile the report for the three respective antimicrobials and submit it with recommendations to the DTAB Chairman for final determination.
The list of 34 antimicrobials newly recommended for prohibitive use in animals includes many of the most important antibiotics and antivirals utilized in human medicine.
A few include:
- Antibiotics Ceftobiprole, ceftaroline, carbapenems, penems, monobactams, glycopeptides, lipopeptides, fidaxomicin, eravacycline, etc.
- Antivirals Favipiravir, galidesivir, methisazone, molnupiravir, oseltamivir, peramivir, ribavirin, rimantadine, zanamivir, etc.
- Antiprotozoal Nitazoxanide.
Q. What is antimicrobial resistance?
A. Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines. This means that infections are more difficult to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and even death.
Q. What is Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB)?
A. Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB) is the highest statutory body constituted under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 in India. It advises the Central Government as well as State Governments on technical matters concerning the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules.
