DCA Telangana
A special drive against spurious drugs was conducted by the Drugs Control Administration Telangana (DCA Telangana), and multiple medical stores in the state were penalized.
When DCA Telangana planned special raids to test the formulations of 300 drug brands that were vulnerably popular and to ease regulation and the possibility of becoming spurious, such a drive was only expected.
This is merely another move made by DCA Telangana to protect the brand reputations of drugs and formulations that should be reputable.
Results of the Drive
DCA Telangana inspected 296 medical stores.
With a concentrated intention to determine whether any of the medical stores carried spurious or counterfeit versions of the above compounded drugs – which represented themselves in the general population – all but six were cleared.
Those compounded drugs were determined to be spurious, and those stocks were frozen.
Stringent Action Against Offenders
As per the DCA Telangana, this is merely the beginning for the regulatory authority.
After the inquiry related to detection is finished, efforts will also be made to trace the origin and angle of such bogus medicines.
The authority has noted that it will impose stringent actions against all persons and establishments involved in these nefarious means under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and all allied rules; thus, this is an obvious warning sent out about manufacturing and selling bogus drugs.
Surprise Checks
Moving forward, plans by the DCA Telangana include regularly conducting surprise checks at medical stores.
Among many other checks during these surprise inspections will be the check of QR codes on the formulated packs as packaged.
In addition, efforts will be made to audit further to create awareness about such counterfeit drugs.
To safeguard millions of consumers, the DCA Telangana urges consumers to always check barcode and QR code details printed on the labels of all Schedule H2 formulation brands – the 300 most used brands in circulation—before buying them from any medical store or pharmacy for personal and community safety.
DCA Telangana Team
The success of this special drive is due to the supervision and in-house teamwork of DCA Telangana.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of DCA Telangana 3 Assistant Directors of Hyderabad and 6 Drug Inspectors of the HQ office and neighboring districts.
Such collaboration shows how seriously DCA Telangana is taking the matter of counterfeit drugs.
Q. Why is the DCA Telangana focusing on QR codes?
A. QR codes are linked to original products with a trail and trace with manufacturers; these include manufactured licenses and batch numbers; they are complicated for counterfeiters to create.
Q. What are Schedule H2 formulation brands?
A. Schedule H2 formulations are a list of branded drugs that require prescriptions for sale, which makes them susceptible to counterfeiting because they are so easily accessible.
