Hyderabad, Telangana – The Drug Control Administration Telangana (DCA Telangana) has taken action against a pharma distributor based at Hyderabad-based, i.e., Sri Nandini Pharma, for the violations of temperature-sensitive drug storage guidelines keeping in view of proper storage conditions of drugs.

This action highlights the DCA Telangana’s commitment towards the safety of the public of the region by means of providing the safe and efficient drugs to the public with proper storage conditions of the drugs.

Temperature-Sensitive Drugs:

During a meticulous inspection of Sri Nandini Pharma’s premises in Sultan Bazar, Telangana officials discovered alarming breaches of established storage protocols.

Oxytocin injections and tetanus vaccines, which are key drugs and thermolabile (temperature-sensitive) drugs, were found stored at room temperature along with the other drugs.

Thermolabile Drugs:

These drugs are required to be stores at a very specific temperature, typically between 2°C and 8°C, to maintain their efficacy and stability.

Exposer of these drugs to high temperatures can lead to make them ineffective and degradation and that way the become harmful for the patients.

High-Risk Medications:

The specific medications involved, tetanus vaccine and oxytocin, are crucial for preventing serious health complications.

If these are stored on an improper storage conditions, it may affect the therapeutic effect.

Why Proper Storage is important:

The DCA Telangana’s stringent stance is rooted in sound scientific principles.

As a senior DCA Telangana officer explained, “Tetanus vaccine and oxytocin injections are temperature-sensitive medicines that should be stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C to maintain their efficacy.”

Storage at room temperature causes a loss of potency, and the use of such injections may adversely affect patients’ health, as they fail to produce the intended therapeutic effect.”

Tetanus Toxoid Degradation:

The tetanus vaccine relies on tetanus toxoid, a heat-sensitive protein.

This protein degrades when exposed to higher temperature.

Oxytocin Peptide Breakdown:

Oxytocin, a peptide hormone, is a heat sensitive drug.

If it is stored at room temperature, leads to its degradation, which may affect its ability to stimulate uterine contractions, which is very important in labor and postpartum bleeding control.

Enforcement and Legal action:

The raid was conducted by Assistant Director T. Rajamouli along with Drug Inspectors V. Ajay and Goshamahal.

The team has seized all the drugs which were found stored at improper temperature control area.

Proprietor Mithindi Srinivas was present during the inspection and now faces legal action.

Strict Penalties:

DCA Telangana Director General VB Kamalasan Reddy emphasized the administration’s unwavering commitment to ensuring drug quality.

Violations of storage guidelines, whether by wholesalers or retailers, will attract severe penalties under the Drugs Act, including imprisonment of up to two years.

Maintaining Public Trust:

This enforcement action serves as a deterrent and underscores the importance of adhering to stringent pharmaceutical standards.
