The administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh is all set to establish a separate pharmacy council for the centrally administered region in the northernmost part of the country and hopefully it will be realized in another one month, according to the drugs controller of the UT.

The area under the Union territory consists of two districts, Leh and Kargil. The pharmacy council will be headquartered in Leh, says Mohammad Bashir, the drugs controller who has been assigned by the UT administration to work out on the council project.

The proposal for a separate pharmacy council was earlier submitted to the territorial administration by the Ladakh drugs controller and it was approved by the government.

He said, one Institutional Development Plan for the region was submitted to the government through the commissioner-secretary of the medical education department.

The proposal for the pharmacy council is in the active consideration of the administration and it will be approved very soon. The order is awaited anytime, he said.

Before the reorganization of the Union territory, Ladakh region belonged to the Jammu and Kashmir state pharmacy council under a separate pharmacy act for the state of J&K.

The new pharmacy council will first prepare a register of 400 registered pharmacists from Leh and Kargil. Once the council is active, it will take steps to set up institutions for imparting pharmacy education to the students of the two districts.

Currently, students from Ladakh are going to Punjab or Delhi to do a course of diploma or degree, says the DC.

“The proposal for a regional pharmacy council for the UT of Ladakh is in the active consideration of the administration and it is almost in the final stage. Three discussions by higher authorities were already over and in one of them I was also invited to explain my proposal.

I had earlier given the institutional development plan which had been accepted by the government. There were some proposals for the development of the drugs control administration also.

We are expecting an order from the UT administration in another 30 days with respect to the constitution of the pharmacy council,” Bashir told.

Regarding development of the drugs control department, the drugs controller said the territory administration is actively considering a proposal of the DCA for establishing a drugs testing lab (DTL) in Leh.

Two acres of land has been identified and waiting for financial assistance from the Central government.
