The Drugs Control Administration, Telangana (DCA Telangana) cracked down on illegal medical practices in a series of successful raids conducted across districts.

Their vigilance netted misleadingly advertised medicines, an overpriced ointment, and the apprehension of three individuals posing as medical practitioners without proper qualifications.

DCA Telangana Seizes Mislabeled Medicines

In the first raid, officials seized four Ayurvedic and one allopathic medicine that boasted unsubstantiated claims of curing severe ailments like tumors and paralysis.

These medicines were likely advertised with misleading information to prey on vulnerable patients seeking relief.

“We’ve filed cases against the manufacturers of these medicines,” stated DCA Telangana Director-General VB Kamalsan Reddy in an interview with TNIE.

“The seller will act as a witness in our case against them. It’s important to note that no action is being taken against legitimate sellers of these medicines, and their businesses will not be affected.”

Overpriced Ointment Exposed

The second raid targeted a medical shop in Beeramguda, Sangareddy, where officials seized an overpriced ‘mupima’ ointment.

The Maximum Retail Price (MRP) for this 5g ointment, as mandated by the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, is Rs 113.60.

However, the shop was allegedly selling it for a significantly inflated price of Rs 189.

This action highlights the DCA Telangana’s commitment to protecting consumers from unfair pricing practices.

Unqualified Practitioners Arrested

The most concerning aspect of the raids involved the arrest of three individuals from Vikarabad and Rangareddy who were posing as “rural medical practitioners.”

These quacks, as they are often referred to, were operating clinics and potentially treating patients without proper medical qualifications.

This not only puts public health at risk but also undermines the trust patients have in legitimate medical professionals.

The DCA Telangana confiscated a significant amount of medicine worth Rs 71,300 from these illegal clinics, including potentially dangerous steroids.

This seizure prevents these harmful substances from reaching patients and ensures they are disposed of safely.

The DCA Telangana’s swift action sends a strong message to those involved in the illegal sale of medicines and the practice of medicine without proper qualifications.

These raids demonstrate the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring consumers have access to safe and ethical medical care.
