The Govt. of India has created a separate, dedicated, autonomous institution in the form of the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) to deal with matters relating to the timely publication of the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP)

Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) is the official book of standards for drugs included therein, in terms of the Second Schedule to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, of 1940.

Drug dosages are given in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP). Let’s have a look:

Benzylpenicillin Sodium			The equivalent of 1.2 to 2.4 gm of benzylpenicillin daily, in 4 divided doses by IM or by slow iv or by infusion.
Betamethasone		0.5 to 05 mg daily in divided doses.
Betamethasone Sod. Phosphate			The equivalent of 0.5 to 5 mg of Betamethasone daily, in divided doses. Acute adrenal insufficiency, by iv or IM inj., is the equivalent of 10 to 80 mg of Betamethasone daily in divided doses.
Bisacodyl		5 to 10 mg daily.
Bismuth Subcarbonate		1 to 4 gm.

Bleomycin Sulphate			By inj. The equivalent of 15 to 30 Units of Bleomycin weekly in divided doses.
Bromhexine HCl.		8 to 16 mg three to four times daily.
Bromocriptine Mesylate		The equivalent of 2.5 to 20 mg of Bromocriptine daily in divided doses.
Bupivacaine HCl			By infiltration anaesthesia, the equivalent of 2 mg of anhydrous Bupivacaine Hcl per Kg body weight.
Buprenorphine HCl		Sublingually, up to 400 mcg every 6 to 8 hrs.	300 to 600 mcg every 6 to 8 hrs; IM or slow IV;
Busulphan	2 to 4 mg daily	Maintenance dose, 0.5 to 2 mg daily.
Caffeine		300 to 600 mg

Cefadroxil	500 mg to 2 gm daily, in divided doses.
Cefazolin Sodium		1 to 4 gm daily in divided doses, by IM or IV or infusion.
Cefotaxime Sodium		“1 to 2 gm of Cefotaxime Every 8 to 12 hrs by IM or IV Inj.; By infusion, 1 to 2 gm given over 20 to 60 minutes. For children, the equivalent of 100 to 150 mg of Cefotaxime per kg body weight daily in 2 to 4 divided doses increasing to 200 mg per kg of body weight daily, if necessary.”
Ceftazidime		1 to 2 gm, every 8 to 12 hrs, by IM or slow IV or IV infusion.
Cefuroxime Sodium	250 mg twice daily	750 to 1.5 gm, every 6 to 8 hrs, by IM or IV or IV infusion.
Cephalexin	1 to 4 gm daily, in divided doses.
Cephlorididine		1 to 4 gm daily, in divided doses, by iv, IM or deep sc inj.
Chlorambucil	100 to 200 mcg per kg of body weight daily for 4 to 8 weeks.
Chloramphenicol	Adult, 1.5 to 3 gm daily, in divided doses; for a child, 25 to 50 mg per kg of body weight daily, in divided doses.

Chloramphenicol Palmitate	Adult, the equivalent of 1.5 to 3 gm of Chloramphenicol daily, in divided doses; for a child, the equivalent of 25 to 50 mg of Chloramphenicol per kg of body weight daily, in divided doses.
Chloramphenicol Sodium Succinate		The equivalent of 3 to 4 gm of Chloramphenicol daily, in divided doses, by IV inj.
Cholecalciferol	“Rickets; not more than 800 units daily. For the treatment of rickets &osteomalacia, 5000 to 50000 Units daily For the treatment of hypocalcaemia and hypoparathyroidism, 50000 to 200000 Units daily.”	200000 to 400000 Units by IM inj.
Chlordiazepoxide	10 to 100 mg daily, in divided doses.

Cholera Vaccine			“For adults and children over 10 years, by sc inj., initial dose, 0.5 ml; second dose, 1.0 ml after an interval of 4 to 6 weeks. For children 2 to 10 years, the initial dose 0.3 ml; second dose 0.3 ml. For children 1 to 2 years, initial dose, 0.2 ml; second dose 0.2ml.”

Ciprofloxacin			100 to 200 mg twice daily by infusion.

Codeine Phosphate		30 to 60 mg every 4 hrs when necessary, to a maximum of 200 mg daily.

Desferrioxamine Mesylate	After gastric lavage, 5 to 10 gm in 50 to 100 ml of liquid;	By IM inj. 1 to 2 gm in 10 to 20 ml of Water for Inj. every 3 to 12 hrs; by continuous iv infusion, upto 15 mg per kg per hour with a maximum of 80 mg per kg in 24 hrs.
Dexamethasone	500 mcg to 10 mg daily, in divided doses.
Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate		In the treatment of adrenal insufficiency, by IM or slow IV or infusion, 0.5 to 10 mg. In shock, by IV inj, or infusion, 2 to 6 mg per kg body weight, repeated if necessary after 2 to 6 hrs. In cerebral oedema, by IV inj., 10 mg initially, then 4 mg by IM inj. every 6 hrs as required for 2 to 10 days.
Dextromethorphan HCl	10 to 30 mg every 4 to 8 hrs.
Diazepam	In anxiety states, 2 mg thrice daily, increased if necessary to 15 to 30 mg daily, in divided doses; in insomnia associated with anxiety, 5 to 15 mg at bedtime	By IM or slow IV inj. 10 mg repeated if necessary after 4 hrs.
Diclofenac Sodium	25 to 75 mg.	25 to 75 mg.
Dicyclomine HCl	30 to 60 mg daily, in divided doses. An oral Solution is required to be diluted; the diluted solution should be freshly prepared.
Dienoestrol	In the treatment of menopausal symptoms, 500 mcg to 5 mg daily; in the treatment of prostate carcinoma and mammary carcinoma, 15 to 30 mg daily; for suppression of lactation, 15 mg thrice daily for 3 days, followed by 15 mg daily fir 6 days.
Diethylcarbamazine Citrate	150 to 500 mg daily.

Dimethicone		40 to 100 mg, four times daily.
Diphenhydramine HCl		50 to 200 mg daily, in divided doses.
Diphenoxylate HCl		5 to 30 mg daily, in divided doses.
Disodium Edetate			By IV inj. 50 mg per kg of body weight, up to a maximum of 3 gm per day.

Disulfiram	500 mg as a single dose for 1 to 2 weeks	Maintenance dose, 125 to 500 mg daily.
Dothiepin HCl	Initially 75 mg daily, in divided doses,	Increased gradually, as necessary, to 150 mg daily.
Doxepin HCl	Initially, the equivalent of 75 mg of Doxipen daily,in divided doses	Increased gradually to a maximum of 300 mg daily, in divided doses.
Doxorubicin HCl			To be determined by the physician in accordance with the needs of the patient.
Doxycycline HCl	The equivalent of 200 mg of Doxycycline on the first day	Followed by 100 mg daily.

Emetine HCl			By sc or IM inj. 30 to 60 mg daily.
Enalapril Maleate	Initial, 2.5 to 5 mg daily	Maintenance dose, 10 to 20 mg daily; maximum 40 mg daily.
Ephedrine		15 to 60 mg.

Ergocalciferol		“Rickets; not more than 800 units daily. For the treatment of rickets & osteomalacia, 5000 to 50000 Units daily For the treatment of hypocalcaemia and hypoparathyroidism, 50000 to 200000 Units daily.”	200000 to 400000 Units by IM inj.

Ethinyloestradiol		“For menopausal symptoms, 10 to 20 mcg daily continuously or for 21 days, repeated after 7 days, with a progestogen from day 17 to day 26 of the cycle if the uterus is intact. For primary amenorrhoea, 10 mcg on alternate days increasing to a maximum of 50 mcg daily continuously with a progestogen for the last 5 days of the month.”

Fortified Benzathine Penicillin Inj.		To be determined by the Physician in accordance with the needs of the patient.
Frusemide	In oedema, 20 to 40 mg daily; in oliguvria, 250 mg 4 to 6 times daily;	By IM or slow IV inj. 20 to 50 mg
Furazolidone	400 mg daily, in divided doses.
Fusidic Acid	500 mg to 1 gm every 8 hrs.
Gentamicin Sulphate		By IM or slow IV inj. over at least 3 minutes or by iv infusion, 2 to 5 mg per kg body weight daily, in divided doses.
Glibenclamide	5 mg daily, adjusted according to response; maximum 15 mg daily, after food.
Griseofulvin	500 mg to 1 gm daily, in divided doses.
Guaiphenesin	“Adult: 200 to 400 mg every four hrs; Child aged: 6 to 12 yrs, 100 to 200 mg every four hrs; Child: 2 to 6 yrs, 50 to 100 mg every four hrs.”
Gugulipid	500 mg, equivalent to 25 mg of gugulsterones, thrice daily.

Hydroxocobalamin		In the treatment of megaloblastic anaemia, by IM inj. 1 to 2 mg in divided doses, in the first week; subsequent doses, 250 mcg weekly until the blood count is normal; maintenance dose, 1 mg every two months.
Hydroxyprogesterone Hexanoate		By IM inj. 250 to 500 mg weekly during the first half of.
Hyoscine Butylbromide	20 mg four times daily;	By IM or IV inj. 20 mg, repeated after 30 minutes if necessary.
Hyoscine HBr	In the prevention of motion sickness, 300 mcg 30 minutes before commencing journey and repeated every 6 hrs;	If required; by sc or IM inj. for pre-anaesthetic medication, 200 to 600 mcg.
Ibuprofen	600 mg to 1.2 gm daily, in divided doses, after food.

Isoxuprine HCl.		As vasodilator, 20 mg 4 times daily;	“As vasodilator ,by im inj. 5 to 10 mg upto 4 times daily; By infusion, initially, 100 mcg per minute, increased to 500 mcg per minute if required As uterine relaxant, by IV infusion, initially, 200 mcg to 300 mcg per minute gradually increased to 500 mcg per minute until labour is arrested; subsequently by IM inj 10 mg every 3 hrs for 24 hrs, then every 4 to 6 hrs for 48 hrs; then orally, 20 mg 4 times daily.”
Ispaghula Husk		3 to 5 gm.
Kanamycin			“By IM inj. the equivalent of 500 mg to 1 gm of Kanamycin daily, in divided doses By slow iv infusion, 15 to 30 mg per kg body weight daily, in divided doses, every 8 to 12 hrs.”
Ketamine HCl.			By slow IV inj. the equivalent of 1 to 2 mg of Ketamine per kg of body weight over 60 seconds, repeated according to the patient’s response; by deep IM inj. the equivalent of 4 to 10 mg of Ketamine per kg body weight, repeated according to patients’ response.
Ketoconazole		“Adult: 200 mg to 400 mg once daily with food for 14 days Child: 3 mg per kg body weight daily.”
Ketoprofen		100 to 200 mg daily, in 2 to 4 divided doses, with food.
Labetalol HCl.	Initially, 100 mg twice daily with food;	Increased at fortnightly intervals to usual dose of 200 mg twice daily; up to 88 mg daily in divided doses; maximum 2.4 gm daily;	By IV inj. 50 mg over 1 minute, repeated after 5 minutes, if necessary; maximum 200mg.
Levamisole HCl		The equivalent of 150 mg of Levamisole as a single dose.
Levodopa	Initially, 125 to 500 mg daily, in divided doses after meals,	Increasing gradually in accordance with the needs of the patient; optimal dose, 1 to 8 gm daily. Usually used in combination with Carbidopa.
Levonorgestrel		As a contraceptive, 150 to 250 mcg in combination with 20 to 50 mcg of ethinyloestradiol daily.

Light Kaolin	15 to 75 gm.
Light Magnesium Carbonate	“As antacid; 300 to 600 mg; As laxative, 2 to 4 gm.”
Light Magnesium Oxide	“As antacid; 300 to 600 mg; As laxative, 2 to 4 gm.”
Lignocaine HCl	Local anaesthetic, up to 200 mg as a single dose, when given with adrenaline; as antiarrhythmic, by iv infusion, 50 mg to 100 mg at the rate of 1 to 2 mg per minute.

Oxytocin			“Induction or enhancement of labour; iv drip infusion of a 5 % Dextrose Solution containing 1 IU Oxytocin per 100 ml.3rd stage labour & puerperium; 5 to 10 IU, IM or 5 IU, iv slowly. Caesarian section; 5 IU intramurally after delivery.”
Pancreatin		500 mg to 1 gm.
Papain		120 to 600 mg.
Paracetamol		500 to 1 gm every 4 to 6 hrs, up to 4 gm daily, in divided doses.
Paraldehyde			By deep IM inj. as a single dose, 5 to 10 ml; by rectal inj. 5 to 10 ml, suitably diluted with physiological saline.
Penicillamine	In rheumatoid arthritis, the initial dose, is 125 to 250 mg daily before food, increased gradually every 4 to 12 weeks until remission occurs; the usual maintenance dose, is 500 to 750 mg daily.	In poisoning, 500 mg to 2 gm daily, in divided doses or in accordance with the needs of the patient.

Phenytoin Sodium	Anticonvulsant: 150 to 300 mg daily, increasing gradually to 600 mg as per the needs of the patient;	“Status epileptics: by slow IV inj. 10 to 15 mg per kg at a rate not exceeding 50 mg per minute as a loading dose; maintenance doses of 100 mg thereafter every 6 hrs. Arrhythmias: by IV inj. 3.5 to 5 mg per kg at a rate not exceeding 50 mg per minute and repeated once if necessary.”
Pholcodine		Up to 40 mg daily, in divided doses.
Phthalylsulphathiazole		2 to 12 gm daily, in divided doses.
Physostigmine Salicylate			By sc or IM inj. 600 mcg to 1.2 mg.
“Piperazine Adipate, Piperazine Citrate, Piperazine Hydrate, Piperazine Phosphate”		“Adult: The equivalent of 1 to 2gm of Piperazine Hydrate daily, in divided doses. For 7 days; Roundworm: the equivalent of 4.5 gm of Piperazine Hydrate as a single dose.
