Pharmacists and Prescriptions
In a recent development, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has refused the proposal made by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) to allow pharmacists to write prescriptions.
The government announced this decision on Friday, stating that writing a prescription requires examining patients and making a diagnosis, which is beyond the scope of a pharmacist’s practice.
Bharati Pravin Pawar, Minister of State for Health, provided a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha.
What is prescription
Prescription by a doctor refers to a written or electronic order that a licensed healthcare professional, typically a physician or a nurse practitioner, provides to a patient for a specific medication or treatment plan.
The prescription usually includes details such as the name and dosage of the medication, the route of administration, the frequency and duration of use, as well as any special instructions or precautions.
The purpose of a prescription is to ensure that the patient receives the correct medication and dosage, and to provide guidance on how to use it safely and effectively.
In many jurisdictions, prescriptions are legally required to dispense certain types of medication.
Salaries and Eligibility for Pharmacists in Hospitals Governed by State Rules
In the same reply, Pawar stated that the recruitment of pharmacists in government hospitals, their salaries, and the qualifications required for becoming a pharmacist in a hospital are governed by the rules of the respective state.
However, she noted that the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has issued Pharmacy Practice Regulations, 2015, and subsequent amendments, according to which Pharm D graduates can work in various positions in hospitals.
Roles of D Pharm and B Pharm Graduates in Patient Care
In addition, D Pharm and B Pharm graduates are eligible to work as community pharmacists in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide patient care.
This includes optimizing the use of medication and promoting health, wellness, and disease prevention.
Functional Regional Drugs Testing Laboratory in Guwahati
Pawar also mentioned that a Regional Drugs Testing Laboratory (RDTL) is functional in Guwahati, Assam. The laboratory has tested 3,285 samples in 2022 as compared to 1,133 samples in 2018, she added.
