Ciprofloxacin is a widely prescribed antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.
The samples were sent to a government laboratory in Mumbai for analysis.
Testing Reveals Inert Ingredients
The test results, received in December 2023, were alarming.
The tablets contained none of the active ingredient, ciprofloxacin, rendering them completely ineffective in treating any medical condition.
Following this discovery, FDA officials conducted a raid on the Nagpur-based Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital in early 2024.
The raid resulted in the seizure of a staggering 21,600 tablets of the counterfeit medication.
Investigation Leads to Network
Further investigation revealed that the seized tablets were manufactured by a fictitious company based in Gujarat.
Police identified three initial suspects: Vijay Shailendra Choudhary of Thane, Hemant Dhondiba Mule from Latur, and Mihir Trivedi residing in Bhiwandi.
These individuals were apprehended earlier. During the ongoing investigation, authorities uncovered Taneja’s involvement in the scheme, leading to his recent arrest.
The arrest of Choudhary suggests additional progress in dismantling the criminal network.
