PCI
A recent move by Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) will bring relaxation to the thousands of pharmacy students all over India. PCI has issued a circular on 31-12-2024 regarding the exemption on Exit Exam for the pharmacy students.
PCI decided to give relaxation to the pharmacists by means of one-year exemption from the mandatory Diploma in Pharmacy Exit Examination (DPEE).
This decision of PCI comes after many requests and representations received from the students and concerns regarding the change in previous regulations.
Why it is important for Pharmacy Students?
- Temporary Relief: Students who completed their Diploma in Pharmacy course in the year 2022-23 and onwards, can now register themselves in the concerned pharmacy councils without passing the DPEE.
- Condition on Registration: This exemption is a temporary relief and valid for one year or till the DPEE is conducted, whichever is earlier.
- Renewal procedure on DPEE: Pharmacists will still have to pass the DPEE for the purpose of the renewal of their registration certificates.
DPEE Background
- DPEE introduced: The PCI introduced the “Diploma in Pharmacy Exit Examination Regulation, 2022” on 24-02-2022, as a mandatory requirement for all the pharmacy students who are completing the Diploma in Pharmacy course.
- Student Concerns: This decision of PCI regarding the DPEE faced a big opposition from all the pharmacy students due to high registration fee (₹5,900) and the difficulties facing in the examination.
- DPEE Cancellation: The DPEE was canceled just days before its scheduled date i.e. October last year. This cancellation created frustration and uncertainty among the pharmacy students.
Procedure of the Exemption?
- State Council: State pharmacy councils will issue registration certificates to the pharmacy students.
- Affidavit: Students will have to submit an affidavit in the council stating that their registration is contingent upon passing the DPEE. Download the format of the affidavit from the circular above.
- Renewal: Registration certificate will not be renewed by state councils until successfully passing the DPEE by the students.
1. What is the validity period of this exemption?
This exemption is valid for one year or until the DPEE is conducted, whichever is earlier.
2. Do I still need to pass the DPEE?
Yes, passing the DPEE is still mandatory for the renewal of your registration certificate.
3. What happens if I don’t pass the DPEE?
Your registration certificate will not be renewed, and you may not be able to work as a pharmacist.
