QR Codes
The Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (Gujarat FDCA), has busted a scam of fake QR codes affixed to the packaging of top brands of medicine.
This action of Gujarat FDCA has immediately started a detailed investigation, signaling a serious threat to the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply chain and public health in the state.
Seizure of medicines
Dr. H.G. Koshia, the Commissioner of Gujarat FDCA, stated, “Based on our ongoing investigations and targeted raids across several locations in Gujarat, we have successfully recovered over 900 strips of a medicine of a reputed brand.
The Gujarat FDCA’s quick action in this matter highlights the seriousness of the scam and stringent action of the scammers.
Counterfeiting Tactics Raise Alarm
The fake QR codes, which are used by consumers and drug authorities to verify the authenticity and track the origin of medicines, were found to be placed on the packaging, mimicking the original medicine.
Gujarat FDCA officials have expressed serious concern over this scam, as it indicates a growing level of counterfeit drug operations.
The Govt. of India had issued a notification, GSR 448(E) dt 14-06-2022, for the inclusion of QR codes on the packaging of the top 300 medicine brands with effect from August 1, 2023.
Detailed Investigation Underway
The Gujarat FDCA has started a detailed and multi-pronged investigation into the fake QR code operation.
This includes ongoing raids aimed at knowing the source of these medicines having the fake QR codes and the distribution network involved.
Furthermore, forensic analysis of the seized medicines and packaging material is going on to gather evidence and understand the modus operandi of the illegal activity.
The Gujarat FDCA has indicated that this crackdown is expected to intensify in the coming weeks as they work diligently to identify and apprehend those responsible for this clandestine operation.
Training program of drug officers
Dr. Koshia emphasized the importance of this training, stating, “These training programs are specifically designed to enhance the technical knowledge of our officers to detect fake medicines at an early stage, effectively trace illegal supply networks, and take action against the offenders.
Appeal to public
The Gujarat FDCA has also made an appeal to the general public to remain vigilant and inform the department of any doubtful medicine through official helplines.
Looking ahead, the Gujarat FDCA plans to intensify its collaboration with central regulatory bodies, customs officials, and interstate drug authorities to widen the scope of the crackdown beyond the borders of Gujarat.
