Gujarat FDCA
The Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (Gujarat FDCA) is in the process of acquiring 25 handheld spectrophotometers for on-the-spot testing and analysis of drugs.
This initiative of Gujarat FDCA will enable the enforcement officers to test the drugs on the spot for the quick identification of the drug, whether it is a substandard or counterfeit drug.
On the spot Drug Testing with high-end Technology
The Gujarat FDCA is ready to float tenders via the Government e-Marketplace portal (GeM Portal) to procure these advanced devices, i.e., spectrophotometers.
Dr H G Koshia, Commissioner of Gujarat FDCA, highlighted this transformation, stating, “The use of portable spectrophotometers will highly boost our confidence and capability to detect and eliminate counterfeit/spurious drugs from the market swiftly.”
Financial Backing for this initiative
The Gujarat state government has sanctioned a sum of Rs. 10 crore for the procurement of these spectrophotometers for the department.
These portable spectrophotometers operate on the principle of advanced light absorption techniques, which allow drug inspectors to minutely test and analyze the composition of drugs in real time.
Key Benefits of this Initiative:
Quick Detection of Spurious Drugs:
Real-time onsite testing will reduce the time taken to identify substandard or counterfeit drugs by sending them to the laboratories for testing and analysis.
High Accuracy in Quality Assessment:
Spectrophotometers provide very minute and authentic testing and analysis of drug composition.
No need to rely on a testing laboratory:
Reduces the long process of testing in the laboratory, saving time and resources.
Strengthened Regulatory:
Empowers drug inspectors with advanced and high-end devices for effective monitoring.
Consumer Protection:
It ensures the availability of high-quality and safe drugs to the consumers.
Q. What are handheld spectrophotometers?
A. These are portable devices that use light absorption techniques to analyze the composition of drugs, enabling on-site quality checks.
Q. Why is Gujarat implementing this initiative?
A. To enhance drug regulation, combat counterfeit drugs, and protect public health.
Q. How does spectrophotometry help in drug testing?
A. It measures the intensity of light absorbed by a compound, revealing its concentration, purity, and stability.
Q. What is the cost of the handheld devices?
A. The Gujarat state government has allocated Rs. 10 crore for procuring these devices.
