Thrombophob ointment

The Delhi’s Drugs Control Department (DCD) has successfully intercepted a consignment of counterfeit Thrombophob ointment 20 gm.

The Delhi DCD meticulously planned the operation and raided a prominent pharmaceutical wholesale dealer.

The Delhi DCD has seized a counterfeit version of Thrombophob ointment worth ₹2.5 lakh.

Prompt Action by Delhi DCD

Thrombophob ointment, a very popular brand of Zydus Healthcare Ltd based in Sikkim, became the focal point of this illicit activity.

According to Kamal Ranjan Chawla, the Controlling and Licensing Authority within Delhi’s drug control department, their office received a crucial tip-off directly from Zydus Healthcare.

The pharmaceutical giant reported the circulation of a counterfeit version of their popular Thrombophob ointment within the Delhi market, prompting immediate action.

Intelligence Operation

After receiving the complaint, the intelligence unit of the Delhi DCD promptly started a detailed investigation into the matter.

Their investigation led them to Bhagirath Place, a well-known national market of pharmaceutical wholesale.

It was here that they identified Tarun Kwatra, a wholesale dealer, as the individual allegedly involved in the widespread distribution of the counterfeit Thrombophob ointment throughout Delhi.

Coordinated Raid

The Drug Controller, DCD Delhi Kamal Ranjan Chawla, deployed a dedicated team of enforcement officers of the department.

Keeping in view the importance of expert verification, they also included the cooperation of Mohammad Qaiser Imam, the Deputy Manager of the Vigilance Wing at Zydus Healthcare.

This joint effort led them to a surprise raid on the premises of Kyara Pharmaceuticals, operated by Tarun Kwatra, situated in the bustling Bhagirath Place of Chandni Chowk.

Fake QR Code on the product

Kamal Ranjan Chawla revealed the findings of the raid.

During the inspection of the above-said firm, the team recovered a stock of 1408 tubes of Thrombophob ointment 20gm.

These tubes were found labelled with the batch number 1404138, a manufacturing date of August 2024 and an expiry date of July 2027.

Crucially, the packaging falsely claimed that the product was manufactured and marketed by Zydus Healthcare Ltd at their Kumrek facility in Sikkim.

The presence of the Zydus Healthcare representative proved instrumental in unmasking the counterfeit operation.

Through meticulous physical inspection and a scan of the QR code affixed to the drug labels, the deception was unequivocally confirmed.

Chawla emphasized the pivotal role of the QR code mechanism, stating that it definitively revealed the suspected product to be counterfeit and spurious due to inconsistencies with Zydus’s authentic product data.

Legal Action Initiated

Following the recovery, the raiding team promptly collected samples of the suspected counterfeit drugs on-site for further analysis.

The remaining stock, valued at ₹2.5 lakh, was seized and placed under official custody, in accordance with Section 22 (1)(c) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

According to the Drug Controller, Tarun Kwatra confessed to the facts surrounding the seized products. Subsequently, under Section 18 (A) of the same Act, he was directed to disclose the sources from which he procured these spurious ointment tubes to the investigating officers.

To ensure the integrity of the evidence, the entire raid proceedings and the collection of crucial details were meticulously video-recorded, and digital hash values of the footage were documented. The operation continued late into the evening.

Custody orders

A significant legal step was taken when the Tis Hazari court issued an order granting permission to the drug control department to maintain custody of the seized counterfeit drugs.

The Drug Controller affirmed that regulatory officers are actively pursuing the matter under the relevant sections of the Drug and Cosmetics Act, with the clear objective of initiating stringent legal proceedings against the offender.

Thrombophob: A High-Demand drug

Highlighting the significance of this seizure, Chawla explained that Thrombophob is a fast-moving and widely prescribed drug in the market.

It is commonly used in the treatment of Thrombophlebitis, a medical condition characterized by inflammation and swelling of a vein due to the presence of a blood clot.

The popularity and high demand for such medications unfortunately make them attractive targets for counterfeiters seeking illicit profits.

And diligent drug inspectors:

  • Sandeep Kumar Sharma,
  • Ronak Kumar Purani,
  • Dr. Shabari Girinath Kala,
