Antibiotic
As antibiotic or antimicrobial resistance (AMR) plagues the world, India’s CDSCO has taken steps to ensure that a “Structured Antimicrobial Use (AMU) reporting framework” for veterinary antimicrobials in India will enhance public health efforts and fit a long-term sustainable approach to some of the most critical drugs for treatment.
AMU Reporting Framework
The CDSCO’s veterinary division communicated this development to the state drug regulators.
The DAHD was behind the need for such a framework in communication, which goes to show how important it is to have inter-collaborative teams formed to combat AMR in India.
Therefore, the purpose of the reporting framework is to prepare a system of data entry based on how many antibiotics are manufactured, imported, and sold in India for veterinary use and how many registered veterinary antimicrobials are sold and used in India.
This information will provide valuable parameters for drug distribution systems and provide a systematic approach to data entry for awareness and clarity of usage that could otherwise lead to treatment resistance.
Joint Working Group
Because this is a far-reaching initiative with much activity to assess, a Joint Working Group will be formed for implementation.
This Joint Working Group will consist of members from the CDSCO, DAHD, and State Level Animal Husbandry & Dairying Services (SLAS).
The formation of a Joint Working Group illustrates the need for cross-sectional management of such a large issue as AMR.
All efforts will be compiled through this working group for reporting and collating to ensure a unified national approach.
State Regulators
Finally, the DCGI office sent a note to the state-level regulators of the importance of this national undertaking.
Each state is responsible for designating a nodal officer, who at minimum must be an Assistant Drugs Controller.
This person will oversee all collection efforts as the main point of contact.
Further, each state representative must compile a list of all veterinary pharmaceutical companies operating in each state—manufacturers, distributors, and sellers of veterinary antibiotics.
Q. What is Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)?
According to WHO, Antimicrobial Resistance is characterized by the resistance formed by microorganisms—bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites—that no longer respond to available antimicrobial therapies.
Q. What is the purpose of the AMU reporting framework?
The purpose is to mitigate any potential causes of antimicrobial resistance in animals by understanding what antibiotics are being manufactured, sold, and imported and what knowledge is operable about registered veterinary antimicrobials.
