Syllabus
The Indian scenario of Pharmacy education is due for an anticipated upgrade, as the draft syllabus for the B. Pharm course has recently been released by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) with plans to transform pharmaceutical education and training into a new standard of pharmacy graduate professionals.
The guiding principle of such syllabus changes is that they coincide with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to blend age-old pharmaceutical drugs and processes with a 21st-century approach to technology, research and development, and industrial applications.
Embracing the Future
New-age pharmacy personnel trained in new-age developments.
Indicative courses include a planned requirement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Python coding, and other emerging technologies relative to computational drug discovery and intelligent manufacturing systems.
PCI intends to ready its future pharmacists for multidisciplinary-driven necessities that all factor into data sciences, healthcare analytics, and precision medicine.
The PCI has constructed a well-rounded syllabus built on solid foundations.
Semesters
The first four semesters will feature core areas of study including pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, and pharmacology but also include two compulsory internships whereby students will first immerse themselves within a clinical/community setting to cement patient interaction skills before entering an industrial or manufacturing internship to examine drug formulation within that context.
Interdisciplinary subjects are peppered throughout.
Even hypothetical courses like forensics, law, management, and nanotechnology encourage pharmacy graduates to find alternative employment opportunities in pharmacogenomics, regulatory practice, or medical devices, as a few examples.
Equipping for Future Intuition
Undertaking undergraduate research project segments over two semesters champions innovative activity toward academia and industry-related findings.
PCI hopes to urge new pharmacy graduates to appreciate their problem-solving contributions, whether to collective project completion or their own discoveries, once startup projects are born from educational research and subsequent pharmacy-related endeavors.
Likewise, courses in entrepreneurial management, pharmaceutical dynamics, and startup ecosystems will equip future pharmacy professionals for independent endeavors and management-focused employment opportunities.
Soft skills intentions will also be foreshadowed via role-playing exercises in ethics and patient communications case studies, which ensure graduates are not only technically sound but compassionate and empathetic practitioners as well.
191 credits over eight semesters allow for plenty of electives, minors, majors, and value-added endeavors to custom fit student interests and personal degrees.
Q: When will this new syllabus take place?
A: PCI will entertain public thoughts and feedback on the syllabus proposal until September 20, 2025 when a formalized date of implementation will be determined.
