29 proteins: Five proteins in the SARS-CoV-2 virus have been discovered by an Israeli research team as being responsible for serious vascular damage that might lead to heart attack or stroke.
While COVID-19 is most commonly associated with respiratory problems, it has also been linked to a high rate of vascular disease and blood coagulation, such as stroke and heart attack.
The five proteins that make up the new coronavirus were discovered by Tel Aviv University researchers from a total of 29 proteins. The coronavirus produces 29 proteins when it enters the body, according to the researchers.
“Blood arteries convert from opaque tubes into type of permeable nets or pieces of fabric during infection and protein growth, and there is a rise in blood clotting,” said Dr. Ben Maoz of the varsity’s Department of Biomedical Engineering and Sagol School of Neuroscience.
The researchers looked at the effects of each of the virus’s 29 proteins and were able to pinpoint the five proteins that cause the most harm to endothelial cells and, as a result, vascular integrity and function.
“We tend to think of COVID as predominantly a respiratory illness, but coronavirus patients are three times more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack.
All data indicates that the virus causes serious damage to blood vessels or the endothelial cells that line them. However, the virus has been viewed as a single organism until now.
“We sought to figure out which viral proteins are accountable for this kind of harm “Maoz said. Helial cells, and hence to the stability and function of the circulatory system.
The researchers utilised the RNA of each of the Covid-19 proteins in the study, which was published in the journal eLife, to evaluate the reaction that happened when the different RNA sequences were put into human blood vessel cells in the lab.
Furthermore, the researchers utilised a computer model to analyse and determine which coronavirus proteins had the most impact on other organs without having observed them ‘in action’ in the lab.
“Our research might help uncover targets for a medicine that will limit the virus’s activity, or at the very least minimise damage to blood vessels,” Maoz said.
