Aerosols are commonly used to describe products dispensed from containers pressurized with liquified or compressed gas, but the term “aerosol” actually represents a type of packaging.
Most aerosol products have four distinct constituents:
- Actives or actives solution also known as bulk
- Propellant, which is generally a liquified gas
- Aerosol Can
- Aerosol valve and actuator (Spraying device attached on the can)
The basic working principles of an aerosol product are relatively simple.
When the valve is pressed down by the user, the mixture of gas and bulk is sprayed out. The gas aids in the deposit of the actives on the desired area before evaporating.
The aerosol packaging offers several distinct advantages:
- Factory-sealed, ready-to-use product
- Sprays out contents in very fine particle size
- Spray reaches inaccessible areas with ease
- Easy to use, easy to transport, easy to store
- Small quantity covers a large surface area, in comparison to liquids
- Sophisticated, premium, modern appearance of the product
Since the 1950s, several cosmetic products have been introduced in the United States.
The most successful aerosol cosmetics then were hair sprays, shaving foams, deodorants, and antiperspirants during the 1960s other successful aerosol cosmetics were fragrances and sunscreens.
The production of aerosol cosmetics requires specialist equipment, dedicated propellant gas, and alcohol storage facilities. Flameproof electrical and pneumatic machinery, safety, and firefighting equipment are mandatory.
The production process has the following stages:
- Manufacture of actives solution (or concentrate or bulk)
- Filling of actives solution (or concentrate or bulk) in cans
- Crimping or sealing cans with the aerosol valve
- Pressurizing the contents with propellant gas
- Leak testing of the filled can
- Capping, labeling, coding & boxing.
Quality checks are required at each stage in order to produce a good quality product.
Over the last two decades, aerosol packaging has been gaining momentum in the cosmetics sector in India.
In the late 90s, we saw deodorant brands enter the Indian market and since then most cosmetic retail stores are flooded with numerous domestically produced brands.
The growth of aerosol cosmetics is linked with the growth of the disposable income of our masses and better awareness of personal grooming and hygiene needs.
As the markets for hair care, skincare, and sunscreen grow, so will the use of aerosols as packaging for these products.
