Habit-forming drugs
Director of Drug Control Administration (DCA) in Tamil Nadu, M Sridhar, has outlined a comprehensive plan to address pressing drug-related issues in the state with respect to habit-forming drugs.
Curbing Drug Abuse and Misuse
One of the primary focus areas for Sridhar is to curb the sale of habit-forming drugs and abortion pills without a valid prescription.
To achieve this, the DCA will implement stringent measures against violators, including retail chemist shops and medical stores.
Additionally, the department will conduct district-wise awareness programs to feducate the public, particularly the youth, about the harmful effects of narcotic and psychotropic substances.
Prioritizing Pharma Industry Concerns
To foster a conducive environment for the pharmaceutical industry, Sridhar has pledged to expedite the processing of pending applications for various certificates required for tender purposes.
He has urged industry stakeholders to directly communicate any grievances or challenges they may face, assuring them of prompt attention.
Enforcing Revised Schedule M
The implementation of the Revised Schedule M, a significant regulatory framework for pharmaceutical manufacturing, is a top priority for the DCA.
The department is gearing up to commence the implementation process on January 4, 2025.
To ensure compliance, regulatory inspections based on the new Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) are being conducted in a phased manner.
The first phase, completed in September 2024, assessed 46 companies, with only four found to be fully compliant.
The second phase, scheduled for December 16th and 17th, will target 64 companies.
Addressing Manpower Shortages and Licensing
Sridhar acknowledged that manpower shortages within the DCA have hindered the pace of inspections.
To alleviate this issue, the government is working to appoint 15 new drug inspectors in February or March 2025.
Regarding the licensing of Muthalvar Marundhakam, a government-sponsored generic pharmacy initiative, Sridhar noted that the department has received relatively few applications.
However, 83 licenses have already been issued, with 20 more applications currently under review.
By implementing these proactive measures, the Tamil Nadu DCA aims to safeguard public health, promote responsible drug use, and foster a robust and compliant pharmaceutical industry.
