The Pondicherry drug control department has taken an important step for enhancing the safety, quality, and efficacy of drugs within the region by upgrading the drug testing laboratory.

This involves the expansion of the Drug Testing Laboratory with the establishment of new technology and to update the laboratory.

This upgrade aims to improve the quality, accuracy, and efficiency of various procedures for testing drugs.

Modernization of Drug Testing Laboratory

For modernization of the drug testing laboratory, it will be equipped with the latest instruments for the testing of various ranges of drugs:

  • Drugs: Tests on a range of drugs will be done.
  • Cosmetics: Testing on cosmetics for the safety of the products to comply with regulatory standards.
  • Injectables: Thorough testing on injectables to ensure the potency and sterility of the injectables.
  • Ayush Products: Testing on ayurvedic medicines will be conducted to ensure quality and efficacy.
  • Medical Devices: Testing on medical devices will be done for the safety and functionality of the medical equipment.

All testing will be done on the above products with the procedures as established in the Indian Pharmacopoeia.

Advanced Technology

The government has allocated a sum of Rs. 1.5 crore for the procurement of the latest equipment and instruments to equip the drug testing laboratory.

This investment will enable the drug testing laboratory to conduct all sophisticated testing and analysis, which will come with the accurate and reliable resukts.

Current Limitations

As of now, the drug testing laboratory faces some limitations for testing the drugs and other products.

Samples of medical devices are being tested in the notified testing laboratory of Central Drugs Standard Control Organization’s (CDSCO) in Chennai.

The expansion aims to overcome this limitation by equipping the drug testing laboratory with all the necessary infrastructure for testing of medical devices.

Pharma Park

The year 2025 will be a witness of growth in the pharmaceutical industry in Pondicherry.

The long-awaited pharma park project is to be established this year.

  • Industry Collaboration: The Pondicherry Drug Manufacturers Association (PDMA) has supported the pharma park project, and 50 pharmaceutical companies have given commitment for their investment in this project.
  • Investment: An investment of Rs. 500 crore may be done by both local and out-of-state pharma companies.
  • Infrastructure: The Pondicherry Industrial Promotion Development and Investment Corporation (PIPDIC) is actively working in the infrastructure development of the pharma park of size 200 acres in Karasur.

Access to Affordable Medicines

The drug control department of Pondicherry has actively participated in the initiative of Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendra (PMBJK).

  • Accessibility: 25 Jan Aushadhi stores are now operational across the Union Territory and are providing affordable, quality generic medicines to the public.
  • Collaboration with JIPMER: The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has also made PMBJK outlet operational.
