Telangana DCA
In a recent crackdown on the illegal drug trade, the Special Task Force (STF) of the Drugs Control Administration (Telangana DCA), in collaboration with the Telangana Excise Department, successfully dismantled a major drug trafficking operation.
The racket involved the clandestine shipment of spurious antibiotic tablets from Uttar Pradesh to Telangana through courier services.
The Seizure
The joint operation led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of spurious antibiotics, including:
- Jakclav-625 tablets (amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate)
- Jikpod-CV tablets (cefpodoxime and potassium clavulanate)
- Jikcef-LB tablets (cefixime and lactic acid bacillus)
- Jikcf AZ tablets (cefixime and azithromycin)
In addition to the spurious antibiotics, narcotic drugs, specifically fentanyl transdermal patches, were also confiscated during the raid.
The Culprits
The primary suspect in this case is a repeat offender, currently out on bail. He was arrested along with his accomplice, Munishekhar, a resident of Proddutur in Andhra Pradesh.
The investigation revealed that the spurious drugs were shipped from Uttar Pradesh by one Gandla Ramulu, the main accused.
The total value of the seized drugs is estimated to be around Rs. 6.91 lakhs.
The Modus Operandi
The drug traffickers employed a sophisticated method to evade detection.
They utilized Shree Tirupati Courier Services Pvt. Ltd. to transport the spurious drugs from Shree Pharma in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, to Shiv Pharma Distributors in Hyderabad.
The authorities tracked the shipment and apprehended Gandla Ramulu at Karmanghat. During interrogation, he confessed to procuring the spurious drugs from Prayagraj through Munishekhar.
He also revealed plans to distribute the drugs to Kumar of Karimnagar and Bhaskar of Kurnool.
The spurious Connection
The Telangana DCA has confirmed that the firms mentioned on the drug labels, Geenac Pharma and Wellnow Healthcare, are either fictitious or non-existent.
This highlights the intricate nature of the spurious drug trade and the lengths to which criminals will go to deceive consumers.
The Dangers of spurious Drugs
It is crucial to understand the severe risks associated with consuming spurious drugs.
These drugs often contain incorrect or insufficient active ingredients, potentially leading to treatment failure, adverse side effects, or even death.
This significant breakthrough by the Telangana authorities serves as a strong message to those involved in the illegal drug trade.
It underscores the commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the availability of safe and effective medications.
