Drug recall

Kolkata: In a very important move to ensure the safety of the patients, the West Bengal Health Department has issued an immediate drug recall of all saline and several other drugs manufactured by Pharma Impex Laboratories.

This drug recall has been issued after a joint inspection by central and state drug control authorities at the company’s Baruipur plant, which comes out with serious violations at the manufacturing plant.

Impact on Hospitals:

This ban and drug recall have created immediate challenges for government hospitals across the state of West Bengal.

As Pharma Impex Laboratories has supplied the saline and other drugs, all the hospitals have been instructed to stop the use of these drugs and go for other options for fulfilling the requirements of these drugs.

Details of Recalled Drugs:

The drug recall encompasses a wide range of 17 medications, including:

Eight types of saline solutions, including other necessary crucial solutions for pediatric patients, e.g., electrolyte solutions used to treat dehydration.

Paracetamol infusion solution is used as a common pain reliever and fever reducer.

Antibiotic drugs are very essential for treating bacterial infections, and the same are available in both capsule and injectable forms.

Short-Term Disruptions:

This drug recall is expected to cause minor and short-term disruptions in hospital operations as they are searching for the new suppliers of these drugs.

Hospitals are now facing new challenges for the procurement of these drugs.

The hospitals have started the process of procuring these drugs from the local suppliers, and this process will require adjusting their budgets and navigating potential supply chain issues.

In some cases, patients may be asked to arrange some medicines from outside until the health department comes up with the solution for these drugs.

Doctor’s Concerns:

Dr. Manas Gumta, a surgery professor at the Association of Health Service Doctors, expressed concerns about the shortage of these drugs, especially the saline.

He emphasized the important role of saline in emergency situations and highlighted the potential burden on doctors if patients are required to source their own medicines.

Ensuring Patient Safety:

While this drug recall may cause temporary inconveniences to the doctors and the patients, it underscores the health department’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of the patients and ensuring the quality of medicines.
