The new director of the drugs control administration in Tamil Nadu has given instructions to wholesale dealers that all transactions in the medicine business must be carried out by paying cheques in place of cash.

The retailers must also do the same when they deal with wholesalers. Accepting cash directly from delivery people needs to be avoided.

The director finds that there are chances of misuse or malpractice in the dealings if the dealers receive money in cash form.

The new director, PV Vijayalakshmi, said soon after she took over the charge of the administration, she sent a letter to the traders’ association asking them to implement the new reform in business dealings of medicines in the state.

She said she will strictly monitor the trade practice and if any violation of rules is found, strict action will be taken against the lawbreakers.

The DC hopes that transactions through cheques will avoid all kinds of malpractices by traders and that no direct delivery of spurious or misbranded drugs by delivery boys can be carried out.

Vijayalakshmi said payment of cheque in place of receipt of money will cleanse the market.

Another major reform the new director wants to implement to streamline the medicine market in the state is to restrain illegal and clandestine cross-border marketing of medicines.

She said there are online sales of medicines by wholesalers and retailers from neighboring states to Tamil Nadu. Against these dealings, she will submit a report to the government to take action.

Regarding some alleged unethical business being carried out by some wholesalers in Parry’s, the DC said she will enquire about it and if any malpractice or illegal dealing is found, departmental action will be initiated against the license holders.

Regarding another query, Vijayalakshmi said her office will conduct an inquiry in all the districts if medicines are dispensed by qualified pharmacists in the medical shops.
