Raids and inspections against medical shops have inspired the drugs and cosmetics law enforcement authorities in Kerala to take action against violators of cosmetic rules and those who sell fake cosmetic products in the market.
The enforcement authorities have registered cases against 17 shops under ‘Operation Soundarya’, which involved raids on stockists and dealers of cosmetic products in different parts of the state.
The raids were conducted in 53 premises in 14 districts and products worth Rs. 4.25 lakh were seized. The seized items were produced before the judicial magistrate court.
Inspections and raids to continue
More inspections and raids are scheduled to be conducted next week, with a focus on beauty parlours. Special permission has been sought by the department to carry out these inspections.
The purpose of the department in initiating the action is to remove fake cosmetic products from the market and to ensure that the cosmetic products sold in the state are genuine.
Three types of fraudulent items were found in the raids:
- Fake cosmetic products manufactured by certain companies without manufacturing licences,
- Fake forms of products of popular companies and
- Illegally imported items.
The seized items included:
- Face creams,
- Hair colours,
- Talcum powders,
- After-shave lotions,
- Lipsticks,
- Shampoo,
- Nail polish,
- Dettol,
- Soaps,
- Moisturizers etc.
Complaints from several quarters
The department has received several complaints from various quarters about the circulation of fake cosmetic products in the market, with some reports of severe side effects due to the products.
This was the major reason for an immediate raid, according to a senior drug inspector at the DCA at Thiruvananthapuram.
Awareness classes planned
M Jayan Menon, the State Drug Controller, Kerala said that the department is planning to conduct awareness classes on the sale and use of cosmetic products as many people do not know that there is a regulatory body to control the manufacture and sale of these products.
He also noted that while no licence is required to sell cosmetics, it is required for manufacturing. The awareness classes will begin in March in all the districts.
