Enhancing Transparency: Information Display in Food Service Establishments

In an effort to promote informed choices and dietary awareness, specific guidelines are established for food service establishments, especially those with central licenses or outlets at multiple locations, with respect to food labelling.

These guidelines encompass the display of nutritional information, allergen details, and other pertinent information.

1. Calorific Value Display

Central License or Multiple Outlets:

Food Service Establishments with a central license or outlets at 10 or more locations are required to display the calorific value (in kcal per serving and serving size) against the food items on menu cards, boards, or booklets.

Reference Information:

Reference information on calorie requirements must be prominently displayed, stating, “An average active adult requires 2,000 kcal of energy per day; however, calorie needs may vary.”

2. Additional Information on Menu Cards or Boards

Food Allergens:

Information regarding food allergens, as specified under sub-regulation 5(14), should be mentioned against the food items.

Easy-to-understand symbols may be used to depict allergens.

Logo for Veg or Non-Veg:

The logo for veg or non-veg should also be displayed against the respective food items.

3. Exemptions

Applicability Exemptions:

These provisions do not apply to event caterers and food service premises operating for less than 60 days in a calendar year, whether consecutively or non-consecutively.

4. Nutritional Information and Ingredients

Provision Upon Request:

Food service establishments are required to provide nutritional information, specific requirements from schedule-II, and information on organic food or ingredients, if claimed, upon request.

This information can be provided in the form of booklets, handouts, or on their website.

A deviation of 25 percent may be tolerated in nutritional information declarations.

5. E-commerce Operators and Health Messages

Responsibility of E-commerce Operators:

E-commerce Food Business Operators must obtain the specified information from the respective Food Business Operators and provide it on their websites where applicable.

Health Messages Display:

Nutritional information and/or ingredients information, along with health messages, should be displayed where food is served, following requirements specified by the Food Authority.

6. Authority’s Discretion

Specification by the Authority:

The Authority reserves the right to specify additional food service establishments that must comply with these regulations as deemed necessary.
