Continued……. India and Pharmacy Education: Chapter: 12

Pharmaceutics subject deals primarily with dosage forms description, formulation, study of pharmaceutical additives, various operations carried in pharmacy.

Third semester of B. Pharmacy consists of Physical Pharmaceutics I. This deals with the study of various physical and physicochemical properties of different formulations.

Effect of different properties on the quality of dosage forms. Various areas of formulation research and development involved and stability studies of drugs.

Solubility is ability of a substance to dissolve in a medium which can be water or any other solvent.

IP classifies all the ingredients as soluble, slightly soluble, sparingly soluble, very slightly soluble, and insoluble on the basis of the solvent required for solubilization.

A study of mechanisms of solute solvent interactions and ideal solubility parameters is done.

Different laws such as Raoult’s law and Distribution law and their limitations and applications are taught as the part of syllabus. An introduction of states of matter and related features is given.

Different systems including eutectic mixtures, gases, and aerosols are also studied. Properties of various systems such as latent heat, vapor pressure, amorphous state & polymorphism are explained.

Another important topic taught at this level is surface and interfacial phenomenon. Surfactants and their role are thoroughly studied.

Surfactants or surface active agents are the substances which reduces surface tension between two different phases and hence aids solubilization. Their classification and properties are also studied.

A new phenomenon of complexation is taught. Their applications, methods of analysis, protein binding and thermodynamic stability is also studied. An introduction aboutSorensen’s pH scale and determination of pH is mentioned.

Buffers are the agents which resist the change in pH and responsible for stability of various dosage forms.

Various parameters such as buffer equation, buffer capacity and role of buffers in pharmaceutical and biological systems are also part of the unit.

In the forthcoming chapter, I shall brief about part II of Physical Pharmaceutics.
