Allergen Awareness: Declaration of Food Allergens on Labels
Ensuring the safety of consumers with food allergies is of paramount importance.

The regulations surrounding the declaration of food allergens on food labelling aim to provide clear and comprehensive information, allowing individuals to make informed choices about the products they consume.
1. Mandatory Declaration
- Separate Declaration:
- Foods and ingredients known to cause allergies must be declared separately on the label. This declaration should follow the format: “Contains… (Name of allergy-causing ingredient).”
2. Specific Allergens and Names
- (i) Cereals containing gluten:
- To be declared as the name of the specific cereal, e.g., wheat, rye, barley, oats, spelt, or their hybridized strains.
- (ii) Crustaceans:
- To be declared simply as “Crustacean.”
- (iii) Milk and Milk Products:
- To be declared as “Milk.”
- (iv) Eggs and Egg Products:
- To be declared as “Egg.”
- (v) Fish and Fish Products:
- To be declared as “Fish.”
- (vi) Peanuts, Tree Nuts:
- To be declared as “Nut.” Specific tree nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and cashew nuts are included.
- (vii) Soybeans:
- To be declared as “Soy.”
- (viii) Sulphite:
- If present in concentrations of 10mg/kg or more, to be declared as “Sulphite.”
3. May Contain Declaration
- Cross Contamination:
- In cases of cross-contamination that may lead to the presence of allergenic ingredients, a separate declaration should be made as “May Contain… (Name of allergy-causing ingredient).”
