India and Pharmacy Education: Chapter: 9

Continued……. India and Pharmacy Education: Chapter: 8

Pharmacy Education is imparted in four main disciples. These four major disciples are:

Pharmaceutical Chemistry,
Pharmacognosy,
Pharmaceutics and
Pharmacology.

Rest of the subject knowledge is around these four major disciples.

We shall study various subjects one by one. Chemistry is a branch of science which deals with various properties of matter.

It involves structure of atom and molecules and changes associated with it through chemical reactions.

Pharmaceutical Chemistry deals with synthesis, designing and studying various properties of drugs. All this is covered under various sub disciplines of chemistry which are studied in different semesters of B.Pharmacy course.

Organic and Inorganic chemistry

The first year student studies Organic and Inorganic chemistry. Organic chemistry covers study of bond energy, bond strength, name reactions, various mechanisms of reactions and properties of various functional groups.

On the other hand, in Inorganic chemistry, knowledge of various impurities in pharmaceutical compounds is given.

The various tests to study these impurities called Limit Tests are studied as well as performed in laboratories.

Basics of acids and bases along with buffers is also taught. Buffer system existing in body and various buffers used in pharmaceutical preparations are studied.

An introduction to gastrointestinal agents, dentifrices, antacids various antidotes used in poisoning is given. The synthesis, structure and properties of these agents is studied.

A unit based on various radiopharmaceuticals, their handling, applications in medicine and diagnostic field is also covered.

Analytical chemistry

Analytical chemistry is studied in 2nd as well as 4th year of study. Here, subject knowledge includes various analytical procedures to study different characteristics of drug.

This include techniques such as titration (acid-base, iodometric, complexometric), flame photometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy and many more.

The more sophisticated techniques such as Ultraviolet spectroscopy, Infrared spectroscopy, Mass spectrometry, Nuclear magnetic resonance are taught in higher classes.
