6 Tips for Skin & Hair care during winters

Change in seasons also require change in skin & hair care products & patterns. If we talk about Winter season, it can be dry, harsh & uncomfortable for your skin.

Spending some extra time and money during winters is worthy as it will affect your skin whole year. Below are few tips and ways to take extra care of your precious skin to make it glowing and happy throughout the winter season.

1.   Don’t miss your Sunscreen

Sun doesn’t take a day off. Its harmful Infrared & UV rays harms our skin even in winters. We like sitting under bright sun on a cold winter day.

This exposes our skin even more to sun damage. So, don’t forget to apply sunscreen with UVA & UVB filters to get broad spectrum protection from sun rays.

Tip –   In winters use emulsion-based sunscreen which is in cream or lotion form and in summers use gel or sprayable sunscreen for lighter texture.

2.   Do not use Too Hot water for Bathing

Make your shower time short & quick. Also, use warm water instead of hot water for bathing & washing your hair.

This quick & warm shower will protect your skin from losing excessive oil from skin. This oil produced by our skin act as a barrier, that protects water loss from our skin.

Tip –   Put few drops of coconut or any other carrier oil in the tub or bucket of water for bathing to give extra dose of moisturization.

3.   Use Creams with special Moisturizing Ingredients

Thick cream always does not have good moisturizing properties too. A good cream can be identified with its quick absorbing, hydrating & barrier function.

Various emollients with high spreadability & absorbability enhances the moisturizing & barrier properties of a cream or emulsion. Dry & cold weather increases the requirement for deep moisturization in the skin.

Moisturizing skin twice i.e., in the morning & at night is a must ritual but, one should reapply a moisturizer whenever required throughout the day.

Tip –   Look for special ingredients like Hyaluronic acid, Glycerin, Hydrovance, Acetamidoethoxyethanol, Undecane, Tridecane, Xylitylglucoside, Xylitol, Niacinamide, Panthenol etc. that adds deep moisturization & nourishing properties in a cream or lotion.

4.   Wash Hair or skin with Mild cleansers –

Washing face or hair with cleansers strip off dirt & oil from the surface. In winters when our oil secretes less moisture & oil, it tends to lose its natural oil that acts as a barrier to protect water or hydration loss from the skin or scalp.

On washing hair or skin with harsh Sulphate cleansers will do more of a harm to our skin, resulting in dull, dry & dehydrated scalp & skin.

Using sulphate free cleansers for face, body or head wash will be a natural option for mild & gentle cleansing.

Tip –   Buy sulphate free shampoo, facewash or bodywash for washing hair or skin. Look for ingredients like Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate or Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate on the product label as they are Sulphate free surfactants.

5.   Don’t Forget to Exfoliate your face –

Our skin exfoliates naturally in 28 days. Still, it needs extra exfoliation in winters as during this weather our skin tends to hold onto the dead skin cells.

Exfoliating twice a week is a good idea. Body polishers can be used to scrub body and face exfoliators or scrubs should be used to exfoliate dead skin from the face. Difference between face & body scrub lies in the mesh size of scrub particles.

Body scrubs have bigger particles where as face scrubs have finer exfoliating particles to maintain the delicacy in scrubbing action.

Tip –   One should use oil, cream or lotion-based exfoliators in winter season as they offer nourishment while scrubbing. Gel based exfoliators are good for oily skin and are best to be used in hot humid weather.

6.   Hydrating body & skin fully –

As discussed above, well hydrated skin is the key for healthy & radiant skin. Hydration is the most important factor which needs to be catered in your skincare products.

To hydrate skin, use a good Hydrating Mask fills skin with a boost of hydration in the epidermis which helps in solving the problem of dry & dull skin in winter season. In winters we feel less thirsty, that doesn’t mean that our body require less water.

So, drink ample water to keep your skin & body hydrated during winter season.

Tip –   Apply hydrating gel creams or hydrating mask to fill your skin layers with hydration. Don’t forget to create a barrier with facial oil or moisturizing cream to protect loss of that hydration from skin let it remain in your epidermis.

Approaching winters gives an alarm to awake you to set your skincare according to the dry cold weather. Even vegetables & fruits change with seasons.

So, lets set our dressing tables and vanity ready to make our skin hold in this cold. Let us practice these small tips to hold hydration, to hold moisturization & to hold radiance in our skin.
