Wrinkles: Types and Causes

Ageing is unstoppable, so are wrinkles. Reality is that we cannot completely get rid of wrinkles. One cannot pause or stop on the ageing process.

Ageing shows several signs on skin like — sagging, wrinkles, dehydrated or uneven skin etc.

What Are the Several Causes Wrinkles?

Ageing is one of the significant cause of wrinkles. As we age our skin’s repair mechanism decreases. This leads to skin sagging & formation of lines or wrinkles.

It’s a natural process that we cannot stop. But yes, with proper diet, exercise, skincare products & skincare regime one can delay its occurrence & can age gracefully.

Other factors that cause pre mature ageing & wrinkles are:

Oxidative Stress

When Free radicals or oxidants overpowers our antioxidant defence system capacity it leads to oxidative stress.

In short it can be explained as skin’s enemies are more than skin’s soldiers. These enemies kill the skin cells & hampers synthesis of collagen & Elastin Fibres.

Exposure To Blue light

Excessive screen time leads to disturbance in our circadian clock. Disorder in Circadian Rhythm is a major reason for premature ageing nowadays.

Glycation

It is reduction or weakening of necessary proteins in the skin such as Collagen & Elastin fibres in the skin. These proteins are responsible in maintain dermal architecture & strength.

They maintain our skin’s elasticity & keeps it youthful, plump & radiant. Glycation eventually results in wrinkle formation.

Environmental Damage

Damage of skin cells also happens due to various environmental factors like pollution, harmful sun’s rays like UVA & UVB etc.

This damage stops regeneration of skin that is the major cause of premature ageing.

Hormonal Imbalance

Hormone like ‘Estrogen’ is responsible in making one look younger. Imbalance in this hormone due to several reasons like menopause, leads to increase in signs of ageing like fine lines, sagging, dull skin etc.

Excess Drinking & Smoking

Excessive smoking & drinking of Alcohol leads to damage skin cells that are responsible for skin’s regeneration & maintenance of its youthfulness.

Dehydrated Skin

Dehydrated skin lacks in water molecules beneath the skin that decreases skin’s elasticity. It makes skin’s tissues weak reducing it’s plumpness & youthfulness.

That is why it is said that individuals with dehydrated skin are prone to early formation of wrinkles.

All of the above reasons cause loss of collagen and elastin, roughness, uneven, dehydrated and dull skin that ultimately results in wrinkles.

Different Types of Wrinkles?

The undesirable creases or folds in the skin are called Wrinkles. The wrinkles that are less than 1mm in length & depth are often called fine lines.

The ones that are deeper or wider than 1mm are called coarse wrinkles or deep lines. There are 5 different types of wrinkles, viz. –

Expression Wrinkles or Face wrinkles:

As the name says, these wrinkles are caused due to repeated facial expressions.

  • 11 Lines or Glabellar Lines – They are the two vertical lines between the eye brows. They are also called frown lines.
  • Laughing lines – They are also called ‘Nasolabial Folds’ & ‘Smile Lines’. These lines run from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth. It gets deeper with ageing.
  • Crow’s Feet – They are the Laugh lines around the eyes that looks like a crow’s feet. These wrinkles extend horizontally from the ends of eyes.
  • Vertical Smoker’s Lines – They appear around the mouth from making a repetitive puckering movement.

Atrophic Crinkling Rhytids (Crinkle Lines):

Crinkle lines appear as one of the first signs of ageing. They are the fine lines that aren’t too deep yet but keep getting deeper with time.

They disappear when the skin is pulled tightly. Lifestyle habits, Blue Light effect & excessive sun exposure can significantly influence how early atrophic crinkling rhytids start to appear on your skin.

Permanent Elastotic Creases:

People with a fair complexion if spent a lot of time out in the sun without adequate sun protection, are susceptible to this type of wrinkle.

Permanent Elastotic Creases are deep wrinkles that develop in the areas where the skin naturally creases like – lips, cheeks, the bottom of the neck.

Compression Wrinkles:

Creases that appear on your face, neck, and chest from poor sleep habits like sleeping on your stomach. It’s caused when your face presses against the pillow or bed in the same way every night.

Gravitational Folds:

Around the age of 25 years our skin start losing its collagen by 1% every year. It causes loss of skin’s elasticity which eventually begins to sag and create folds around the neck and chin areas.

Wrinkle Formation is natural & inevitable. We cannot escape it but can surely delay it. We will discuss various skincare practices & skincare ingredients that reduces & delays the formation of wrinkles in next article.
