Minimalist Men’s Skincare routine – in less than 10 minutes

Think back to your dad’s skincare routine. You probably visualise the glimpse of ‘V-John’ shaving cream with ‘Old spice’ after shave, Razor with ‘Topaz blade’, a cold cream & bathing soap in their cabinet. Seeing today’s scenario, we must say that Men’s skincare has come a long way.

Now, large percentage of gentlemen believes in grooming & using right kind of products for their skin, hair & beard.

They not only understand the importance of grooming but also knows that buying right kind of products is equally important.

Nowadays, men’s grooming & skincare products are specially made with results-driven formulas that make up an effective skincare routine for men.

For men who are still not sure how to build a skincare regime for men that is quick yet effective? No worries, in this journal we will discuss everything you need to know about men’s skincare regime in a minimalist yet effective way.

Understanding Men’s Skin

How is men’s skin so different from women? Does it actually require a separate set of skincare products or its just clever marketing and social conditioning at play? Answer to these question is ‘yes’.

It’s observed that men’s skin is between 10 and 20% thicker than women as it contains more collagen and elastin.

Testosterone are androgens that affect the thickness of the skin. It’s also responsible for production of sebum in the skin from sebaceous glands. So, high amount of testosterone makes men’s skin thicker & produce more sebum.

Skincare Routine For Men

Going deeper into details about men’s skincare routine, it’s important to understand that they like to keep it quick and minimalist.

For some men it might mean just a cleanser and a moisturizer. But adding in a few extra vital steps can significantly show improvement in the health and appearance of the skin.

The following routine will take just less than ten minutes.

Cleansing

Regardless of gender, cleansing is an important step in any skincare routine.

We have discussed before that men’s skin produces high amount of sebum due to which it becomes naturally oilier than women’s skin, cleansing removes dirt, pollutants, and excess oil that settles in the pores and the skin’s surface.

Cleanse twice a day (morning and night) and after a sweaty workout session:

Use a mild sulphate & Paraben Free facewash. Work the facewash in circular motions to form lather for 20 seconds. Then wash off completely.

Toning

Toners or facial mist have made their space in skincare as people have realised its importance and seen their efficacy.

Toners have come a long way from pricking alcohol-based toners to concern targeting penetrating mist.

Today you can find products that are specially formulated to cater concerns like hydration, mattifying, control blemishes, skin tightening etc., so choose wisely according to your skin type and needs.

Use toner everytime you wash your face for toned & hydrated skin:

Use Toner or face mist that are free from denatured alcohol. Swipe a cotton ball or spray around your face after cleansing & let it dry out for better penetration.

Target

This step includes Serums that are specially used to ‘Target’ some skin concerns. Serums come in two categories

Face Serum:

Using a serum is a step that many men may have never even thought about, but its highly recommended.

Serums are highly concentrated form of emulsions that are formulated to target special skin concerns in an effective way.

They penetrate the skin at a deeper level to target skincare concerns that you are experiencing like — wrinkles, pigmentation, excessive sebum and acne and many more.

Men should prefer water-based serum over silicone ones as these might block the skin pores.

Under Eye Serum:

Men should use a serum targeting their skin concerns but should not forget to pamper their peepers with an undereye serum – as this is the most neglected area.

Skin around this orbital area is very thin & fragile, so it needs an extra care. Specially, if a person is spending most of the day in front of screens, then any eye or face serum that have peptides & solves Blue light effect on the skin should definitely be included in the skincare regime.

Never neglect concerns such as – puffiness, dark circles, dryness, and eye wrinkles

A serum should be applied day and night:

Buy a serum that have an effective efficacy data attached to it. Apply a pea-sized amount in upward direction giving patting strokes or using a Gua sha Roller.

Then wait approximately for one minute for the product to fully absorb before moving on to the next step.

Hydrate

People often confuse Hydration with Moisturization. But, both of them have different roles to play in skincare.

A hydrating cream works in improving hydration level i.e., water level of the skin. It helps all the skin proteins & amino acids to work properly to promote cell regeneration.

It also helps in making skin appear plump & radiant.

Application of a long-lasting hydration day cream or gel cream that even stays after washing face is must and a game changer in the skincare regime.

It’s on the same phenomena that hydration in skin is equally important as the hydration in body.

Apply hydration cream every day in the morning after the serum:

Use hydration cream that is specially formulated according to men’s skin.

As discussed above men’s skin is thicker & oilier, so they need hydrating creams that have mattifying effect with good & light feel penetrators.

Apply it all over the face in upward direction including décolletage.

Moisturizing

A moisturizer’s main function is to create a skin barrier that prevents essential hydration loss from the skin.

Moisturizer also delivers vitamins and nutrients to the skin & protect your skin from environmental aggressors like pollution & harmful sunrays.

It also helps in preventing TEWL (Trans Epidermal Water Loss) from the skin.

Apply a Moisturizer on clean skin in the morning and before going to bed:

It helps inreplenishing moisture loss during sleep maximize the potency of the skin-strengthening nutrients while your body’s cells regenerate.

Sun Protect

Heat of sun may feel good on your skin during winters and gives you vitamin D. But it’s crucial to wear a sunscreen moisturizer or gel with appropriate SPF daily.

It protects skin from harmful effects of UVA/UVB rays that majorly causes hyperpigmentation & premature ageing.

Sunscreen Lotion or cream helps in maintaining an even skin tone and helps prevention from many kind of skin diseases.

Apply Sunscreen every time you step out in sun in the day time:

Use a water or gel-based formula that is non sticky. Now a days sunscreen with Oil Trap technology is trending that do not deplete even after coming in contact with water.

Sunscreen should be reapplied after every four hours or as mentioned in application process of the product for the best results and protection.

Regenerate/ Exfoliate

Exfoliating is not a daily step — but it is an important one because it helps in removal of the dead skin cells that accumulate on the epidermis & block the skin pores.

This step cleanses the skin surface & helps keep pores clean and refined.

This prevents skin from breakouts & helps in regeneration of new skin cells. Chemical Peels or Physical exfoliators can be used to do this step. Find an exfoliator according to your skin type & need.

Exfoliation should be done twice a week:

Some exfoliators are formulated to be gentle enough for daily use (be sure not to over exfoliate). Always follow the ‘instruction to use’ on the label for best results.
