We often hear & read about clays. Clay has been extensively used for therapeutic and cosmetic benefits since ages.
Clays are naturally derived mud but, it’s just not mud. It’s not the one that is used for sealing glass on windows or play dough used for playing by kids. Then what is a Clay?
What Is Clay?
Clay is a mud with Phyllosilicates that made out of volcanic ash, finely grained soil and decomposed plant material.
It is highly rich in electrically charged minerals (called clay minerals) like calcium, sodium, magnesium, potassium, iron and silica.
Clay has various skin improving abilities. It benefits skin by purifying skin, cleansing open pores, tightening skin etc.

1. Fuller’s Earth
It is popularly known as Multani Mitti. Fuller’s Earth is an expert in absorbing sebum. It helps to control excessive oil on skin, clean pores & target hyperpigmentation.
Fuller’s earth can be drying for people with dry skin. Using it in combination with other clays helps in reaping its benefit.
2. Bentonite Clay
Bentonite swells when mixed with water and turns into a highly porous material. Bentonite can absorb more water than its mass, thus making it effective for hydrating & soothing skin.
It has antibacterial & detoxification properties that helps in drawing out skin impurities for cell regeneration, this clay also helps tighten skin.
3. Kaolin Clay
Kaolin Clay comes in different colours like yellow, pink, white, red etc. This clay is gentle and great for people with dry sensitive skin.
It is observed that kaolin clay’s pH is similar to our skin’s pH level that is why it is milder than other clays. It absorbs impurities, cleanses skin pores, offers gentle exfoliation and boosts circulation.
4. Rhassoul Clay
This clay is found in Morocco & is also called Moroccan Clay. It has great properties that is good for both skin and hair.
It come in three colours white, green & red. Red Colour clay is highly packed with minerals.
This clay is known to absorb excessive sebum without making the skin dry, so it suits the people who have dry irritated skin. It is also known to remove blackheads and other impurities.
It improves skin elasticity and texture & is gentle on skin. When we use for hair, it clears build-up, restores volume, and boosts shine.
5. French Green Clay
French green clay is also called sea clay, this clay is pure & untreated, it gets its green colour from the decomposed plant material and iron oxide.
This clay is great for absorbing impurities, boosts circulation by pulling blood towards the skin’s surface & has excellent soothing & calming properties.
It naturally exfoliates the skin leaving it looking radiant & feeling soft. It maintains skin’s pH level & is suitable for oily & combination skin.
6. Dead Sea Mud
This mud is extracted from dead sea located in Israel. People usually visit this area to bath within the waters.
This mud has extreme therapeutic, detoxification, soothing & healing properties. Dead sea mud contains 21 types of minerals that makes it most mineral- rich mud on the Earth.
